Re: Things I see over and over in amateur writing...

Good lord, the challenge that never ends! ;) I don't care if Cyfress doesn't.

Re: Things I see over and over in amateur writing...

I take it from these comments that Steve is a professional writer?

Re: Godless

Much better than the character named after me in Game Of Thrones.

Re: Multi-cam vs. Single-cam versions of the same series/pilot

I think the biggest determining factor might be the tone of the piece. The rhythms of multi-cam are just so different than single cam - the type and frequency of jokes, etc.

Here's a multi-cam...

Re: Things I see over and over in amateur writing...

ComicBent, that's very generous of you. However you and Steve want to handle posting the script is fine, obviously anonymity doesn't matter there. I will email you my notes.

I promise not to...

Re: Things I see over and over in amateur writing...

I'm going to say everything I have to say that seems helpful. I'm guessing it won't be more than a couple of pages, but maybe I'll be inspired.

Re: Things I see over and over in amateur writing...

Harbak, you're undoubtedly right, but Steve's putting himself out there, so I'll stick to my word. Someone nominate themselves to be the keeper of the notes - Cyfress and I can send notes, and that...

Re: Things I see over and over in amateur writing...

Cyfress, you're already saying you know you won't win, and accusing this whole thing of being a setup on a challenge you initiated. If you don't want to do this, say so. If you want to go ahead,...

Re: Things I see over and over in amateur writing...

I'm up for posting both sets of notes in public (if the writer agrees), so people beyond the writer can follow along. Again, the only reason for me to do this is that it may provide some educational...

Re: Things I see over and over in amateur writing...

Hey, man, before I said a word, 100% of people reacting to your original post said it was angry, mean and belittling. ;)

OK, challenge. KitchonaSteve, this is Cyfress's deal. He can choose...

Re: Things I see over and over in amateur writing...

There's a surprisingly large amount of misinformation crammed into one paragraph.

First off, if Affleck and Mara got their full quotes, I think 25 million is off by about, oh, 21 million.

Yes,...

Re: Things I see over and over in amateur writing...

Sorry, missed this in the logorrhea.

THEY ARE BOTH RIGHT. Some writers (myself included!) give a lot of importance to theme. But there are writers I admire, writers with better careers -...

Re: Things I see over and over in amateur writing...

Cyfress, my point is that you so cling to your guidelines and signposts and percentages and whatever, that you would have trashed a script that was made into a film that met with universal critical...

Nominated for seventeen awards so far, won ten of them. Obviously most of these are smaller competitions because the big award noms haven't been announced yet.

Re: Things I see over and over in amateur writing...

I'm afraid I don't have time to give notes on a random screenplay. If you'd like a sample of my (and some other professional writers) critiquing ability, I'd suggest checking out the...

Re: Things I see over and over in amateur writing...

A Ghost Story was made for 100,000 dollars, and made 2 million in limited release. It's at 90% on RottenTomatoes, and Metacritic gives it "universal acclaim."

20 critics put it on the Top 10...

Re: Things I see over and over in amateur writing...

"Confidence" is the exact word I would use. Some people can tell a story and hold the room's attention. Those people have voice.

Re: Things I see over and over in amateur writing...

I'd call Ferris Bueller picaresque, if I had to put a label on it. And why is it any harder for a writer to write a story where the main character doesn't change, instead of one where they do?

You...

Re: Things I see over and over in amateur writing...

I lied.

I can think of one rule. Supposedly Billy Wilder said it, but that's probably apocryphal.

"Don't be boring."

That's it. If a screenplay pulls you through it and never bores you, it's a...

Sure. I don't think I've ever heard someone say "MDQ" as a shorthand, especially when the phrase hadn't been said before in a conversation.

Is that what a...

Re: Things I see over and over in amateur writing...

I'm not in the slightest. I translated your percentages into page numbers. I pretty much think a script needs a beginning, middle and end. That's about as dogmatic as I get. (And before you ask, I...

Re: Things I see over and over in amateur writing...

Are you saying a screenplay needs to have a character who has an emotional journey that's affected by the plot? If so:

1. The buzzwords are really confusing to me.
2. IMO, that's a reductive view...
