Re: When you query ...

Are you sure about this? Is consensus really achievable?

There are plenty of stories of material getting shot down for various reasons, such as Nightmare on Elm Street, Back to the Future, The...

Re: When you query ...

This is how weird and subjective this business is -

My script got trashed on The Black List.

But the producer I was waiting on got back to me and said he read it and would love to talk on the...

Re: Martin Scorsese's Op-Ed on Marvel and Cinema

I've already been shaking my head at this Marvel craze for some years now, so I'm glad someone came out and said it.

In my view, it's virtually the same film over and over and over. I'm amazed they...

Re: WCA Agreement gone wrong....

I know it sucks, but this is what contracts are for. People change their minds, etc. It sets in writing what was the goal when you agreed to enter a project.

Unfortunately, contracts do not talk...

Re: WCA Agreement gone wrong....

I don't know what your contract states, but if I were you and he's being a bully then let him spin his wheels and don't engage. If he can point to specific breaches of contract on your part then you...

Re: The Irishman

Ahh okay. I don't live in the US, so it's only coming to streaming here in about three weeks. That's a pretty damn long film for the cinema.

Where are you seeing this? Is it out in cinemas now?

Re: When you query ...

Thanks so much for the thorough reply!

So to clarify about the producer thing, there are two aspects which made it a disappointment. I do not think he owes me anything.

One is that he seemed to be...

Re: When you query ...

Hey there, thanks for the answers and advice. I'll start casting a wider net now. Your advice sounds good. This wait is too painful and it would be better if I'm constantly juggling a few people...

Re: When you query ...

I was advised to not do a mass query to start but to gauge reaction off a few reads before going after many producers / companies.

So that's why I only wrote a few.

But so, I should just go for it?...

Re: When you query ...

How often do producers meet their deadlines of reading?

Is it bad if they don't?

I followed up with the producer that requested a read, and he replied and even gave a specific finishing date. He's...

Re: Dolemite Is My Name

Wow, didn't know all that. I guess that oughta make us scared if it took Eddie Murphy 16 years to get a movie made!

It did pale in comparison to Ed Wood (imo), sadly. But good nonetheless.

Re: Joker

I'm in the this was good / not masterpiece camp.

The highlights:

* Joaquin Phoenix.
* De Niro.
* The score.
* Great and rare depiction of mental illness, pretty much never captured in mass market...

Dolemite Is My Name

Thought it was overall enjoyable.

Had a rocky start that was very "generic 2010s biopic" but finally finds its footing about halfway through. I wouldn't say it ever elevates to masterpiece...

Re: Book option

For what it's worth, you very may well need life rights from the person or their estate. And if there's only one book about the person, there could be a reason. Such as they (or their estate) are not...

Re: I, Tonya

Just watched this. A good opening that builds and builds until the halfway point. I was totally enthralled by then. But it loses its footing, pacing, tone and goes overlong afterwards.

Regardless,...

Re: JoJo Rabbit

The trailer is not looking so great to me, and it's a big shame.

I saw Boy in the early '10s and was blown away by it. Then came the vampire film, which I thought was a bit too corny. Then...

Re: El Camino - anyone else underwhelmed?

Only just saw this comment. I highly recommend. Seasons 2 and 3 are masterworks in my opinion. At times besting Breaking Bad. Season 4 was a big step back imo though.

Re: The next TERMINATOR flick

This is what it looks like to me too. But, I'll let it do the talking for itself. Trailers don't ever tell the full story. That said, probably wait for a video / streaming release on this. The...

Re: El Camino - anyone else underwhelmed?

Yes, I was disappointed. Felt unnecessary. Some of the (many) negatives:

* Long opening that cuts back and forth in time relentlessly for no reason.
* Jesse's character spends most of the movie...

Re: Best books on producing?

Don't think I have ever listened to a podcast before, but this seems really interesting. I'll give it a shot. Thanks for the tip!

Re: Best books on producing?

I highly recommend writers read as many books on production as they can, even just 1 or 2. It's already clear after 100 pages of a single book why and how producers make the decisions they do. And it...

Re: Best Jobs While Waiting For The Big Break in Film

You can do anything, really. It doesn't matter. I'm the CEO of a company. I think there is a big myth about what you have to do to make it. Write well and don't get discouraged. Those are the only...
