Re: Long Shot

Two hours I could have spent more pleasurably driving nails into my eyeballs.

Re: When manager only likes one script?

This is all good advice. I'm just going to hand in there a while - not burn any bridges. I don't think the "old vs. new" thing really applies in this case, since some of the ones she didn't like...

When manager only likes one script?

After years of cold querying I finally got a manager. She seems to be well connected, was enthusiastic about the script and got it into a couple of top-rung companies -- though it hasn't sold. ...

Re: Oscars

Yup. "Three Billboards" is infinitely superior to "The Shape of Water." TSOW did deserve to win for art direction - it's a great-looking film but dramatically nothing. I understand that my Willing...

Re: Downsizing

Alexander Payne has made a bunch of good films and a couple of great ones (ELECTION, NEBRASKA) and you don't expect to see him get completely lost. But this one... it has a great premise, of course,...

Re: Lady Bird

Certainly a decent film but not as good as I expected. It's full of a "this is so interesting because it's MY story" attitude. Which is something you expect a filmmaker to get over pretty early on.

Re: Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Superb film. I understand JoeBanks problem with t5he ending. McD obviously wanted to avoid a deus ex machina ending but also wanted some kind of closure - not sure what else he could have done. ...

The Florida Project

Wow! This is pretty much perfect and the kind of thing a studio would never do. My only complaint is that the print (or the file, I guess) seemed a little fuzzy. Still, the best film I've seen...

Re: Experience with the Blcklst and first evaluation

I've had a bunch of scripts on the BL and spent more money on paid reviews than I care to calculate. In my experience -

Around 20% are extremely useful - whether positive or negative.
30% are...

Re: Hell Or High Water

Best movie I'v seen this year. Interesting structure with the two pairs of protags. Reminded me of NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN (which is kind of obvious) and also of THE THREE BURIALS OF MELQUIADIS...

Florence Foster Jenkins

I'm a musician and I've known about FFJ most of my life. So I wanted to see this, particularly because it's a tricky writing assignment: taking a static situation (woman doesn't know she can't sing)...

Re: Films with Selfish Protagonists

Two I particularly like are NIGHTCRAWLER and YOUNG ADULT because they resist redemption - the protags are just as despicable at the end as they were at the start.

Re: Have you ever sent queries to the same manager/agent?

Don 't overestimate their bookkeeping capabilities. I've queried people over and over again. Sometimes they'll take it on the third or fourth try. I've had MANY reads from managers who read and...

Re: Getting read by The Green Room - How excited should I be?

Anybody know who the lit managers at The Green Room may be? From the client lists they seem to be mostly talent.

The Lobster

This came out last year but I just saw it. Certainly is one of a kind. Not sure how to describe it - imagine something written by Michel Houllebecq and directed by Jean Luc Godard on a bad acid...

Absolutely, I agree. I applaud the attempt - I just didn't find it possible to be as fully engaged with the second half after the trauma of the escape. But yes, the second half does present...

Re: Room

I think it's probably the best film of the year, BUT - it does have a problem: it's two movies. And they're both very good, but the second can't match the first for intensity and the audience is so...

Of Oz The Wizard

This video epitomizes the peculiar charm of an undertaking enormously difficult and time-consuming and totally useless. Wonderful!

Re: Unsolicited Queries?

Don't be deterred. I'm sure I've had hundreds of these. It's standard practice at agencies (of course) and at management companies that like to think of themselves as elite. But if you send them a...
