Re: Writing on Spec Question

Hi, Jeff!

Can you tell everyone it was nice checking back in for me? I can't do it because somehow my computer and this message board don't mix. When I click "New Posts" or "Today's Posts" none of...

Re: Reader's comment

Who are the mods?

I forget how to use a message board.

When I compulsively check in, I can't get the threads to refresh. "New posts" doesn't do it nor does going to "today's posts" in quick...

Re: Producer wants to talk... now what?

Agree with DavidK.

Let the producer see you are smart, sane, and ambitious. Don't be a weirdo. Don't suck up all the air in the room and don't disappear. Don't try to hard, don't play cool.

What...

Re: Getting repped/Coming out strategy

For starting writers, managers are more important than agents. Start there for sure. Don't even worry about an agent. You'll know when that time comes. Probably not on this project though.

You are...

Re: Writing on Spec Question

I talk about this whenever I'm doing screenwriting forums.

I think if you are trying to break into features, in this current environment, this is one of the strongest ways to break in. It is a...

Re: Brand yourself as a single genre writer?

I agree with the OP and Done Deal.

Getting work in Hollywood is about phone calls. Being good in a specific arena makes the conversation more focused.

When you're reps call about a gig, they can...

Re: Giving a Producer a Writing Credit

Agree with everyone else here.

Real producers do not do this.

Real directors do, though. But that's a different story

Re: Speccing an IP you don't own.

I'm not reading every post but I don't get the adamant "no"s on know IPs.

Didn't Justin Marks break in with a Voltron spec?

Let's say you write a Daredevil spec. If it's awesome, aren't you...

Re: Developing a script with a new director

I don't know **** either.

I do know people always try to muscle people off projects be it producers, directors, actors, whatever.

So if you commit to this guy -- and your script is good -- you...

Re: Developing a script with a new director

Re: Developing a script with a new director

First off -- a general thought:

The internet has poisoned a ton of writers (many of them here). Too many of you guys think you can game or work or navigate the system based on sh!t you're hearing...

Re: What's the difference between a draft and a revision?

If you're working at a studio, drafts are what you turn in to the studio after you've gotten notes, addressed them, then done revisions for the producer/director.

Re: What's the difference between a draft and a revision?

No official answer but you're definitely not out of the first draft phase. In fact, you're in "rough draft" phase.

Usually there's a ton of work before you get a 1st draft -- which is a draft that...

Re: Script Shadow Shafts "slaughter"

I don't know what to say.

There is no doubt that the writer did not want to be reviewed. Of course he should have said "no", but from what I read, anyone who believes that there was grey area also...

Re: Slug preference question

I use the action sluglines if it's important to seamlessly carry the movement.

So if it's not important to stay with him and use the slugline as a transition, then I go with the traditional slug....

Short version: read Walter Hill. Read Shane Black. Read Scott Frank and Scott Silver. Gilroy. Capra.

If you think they are "outdated" you are wrong. I know some of you think the guy who just sold...

Awesome post, dude.

I feel the same way. I think the internet has mostly helped screenwriters but it has created a weird culture of obsession too. The infatuation that always existed with gurus and...
