What to do...

Pardon the length here...

Had a script that was just sitting there. Was the first script that my manager took out wide. Got me out there and in rooms. A big producer called in May and said he wanted...

Re: Not responding back after reading script

I like manager flake out stories. I remember reading some here years ago, I believe they mostly involved a couple of managers showing up at get-to-know-you meetings effectively wiping ye olde...

Re: Offers to option quandary

I mean youíre objectively incorrect that you need life rights in CA to make a feature or a documentary or to write a book.

There are constraints (see, the music rights) but nothing to prohibit a...

Re: Offers to option quandary

Under the Astaire act I can make a Frank Sinatra documentary. I canít (at risk of litigation from his estate, I assume) use his likeness to sell my Signature Sinatra Bourbon.

Re: Offers to option quandary

I donít think they enjoy any such status as it pertains to facts in the public domain and creative expression of such. There have been plenty of rulings affirming this for celebs and non-celebs...

Re: Offers to option quandary

Very public figure and life rights weren’t necessary. Also, dead.

But having the blessing of the family at this point is very helpful, now that we’re actually trying to make it.

Re: Not Writing the Types of Movies You Love

I like everything aside from big action stuff (unless itís high concept 90s-esque spec fodder type material) but I mostly stayed in my lane of true story/historical fiction stuff. My last spec was...

Re: Offers to option quandary

I had several offers over the last couple of years for low dollar (3-5k) options on a project that was just sitting there. I didnít take them because I didnít think the people could get them made....

Re: Preventing unwanted changes in rewrites

Was talking to a VP of production the other day and she was talking about a general she had recently and the writer, right off the bat, was very precious about his work. (The irony of who she had...

Re: What do you think about?

I donít try to back into the page number. Frequently itís off by a couple. Sometimes more. But with each script I think I get better at eyeballing where it will land in the outline phase.

Re: What do you think about?

I donít much see the logic in not being a page count fascist in TV and not features. I know what the response will be as it pertains to the latter - ďitís flexible! It matters less!Ē Ok. Maybe. But...

Re: What do you think about?

Iíd encourage everyone to watch the Russos podcast with Hamill where they discuss Empire. Now obviously they arenít discussing page count in aggregate because they donít have to worry about that. But...

Re: Picking Right Idea

ďyet there's no way to accurately calculate which idea will blow away buyers and make them think: Gotta have it.Ē

I bet I could guess which ideas by non-established writers WONíT sell.

Re: Picking Right Idea

ďWould I pay to watch this in a theater?Ē is the question I always start with. That doesnít mean itís not a fit for a streamer, but letís think about whether or not the idea will get people excited....

Re: What do you think about?

If you write a 160 page script you should be arrested. Anything on spec over 115 is excessive.

Re: Judging Your Own Work

Improving idea selection for me has been huge. On spec, you better have a compelling hook. I go back and look at my list of old ideas from, say, three years ago - terrible.

Iím still not really...

Re: Not responding back after reading script

If my rep didnít respond to an email or got pissed for sending too many...Iíd end that relationship rather quickly.

I do remember you have a few good manager stories. 😆

Re: Trim Down That Spec

I write brief and concise action lines because that is how I naturally write. Making things ďliteraryĒ for me is not easy. I would not squash that part of your voice if you have a natural...
