Re: Nicholl 2020

Whiff for me. They noted that a couple of my entries got positive reviews from first round readers, but that's not much comfort when you don't advance. Based on stuff I've entered over the years,...

Re: Contest v.s Query Letters

Bit late to this party, but...

CONTESTS - If you finish high in a reputable contest, industry folks will come to you. I've had it happen before and it was a nice experience. You become the commodity...

Re: Nicholl 2020

I guess I'll be buying a Tesla instead of a Honda with my winnings.

Probably this one. (https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/717EGDCLgXL._AC_SY679_.jpg)

Re: Nicholl 2020

I've had four scripts get top 15% (two in the top 10%) and I would say they were about the level of a 7 on the Black List. If you are getting 7s on your script then I think it has a pretty decent...

Re: Nicholl 2020

Wow, that's a staggering number of entries. Winning may be harder than ever, but placing could be easier. You could argue that "serious" writers were going to get their scripts in regardless of the...

Re: Nicholl 2020

Those numbers look about right.

They are up over 4500 now, and I'm guessing with a last minute surge will end up around 5500-6000 when all is said and done. Still a pretty good turnout.

For me...

Re: Nicholl 2020

I think Launch Pad is pretty legit, but I don't have much experience with them. I entered a pilot last year and it did nada, which is fine, but they kept pushing back the announcement date for their...

Re: Sci-Fi clichés

One that immediately comes to mind is twists where "reality" turns out to be a simulation. It's really stale to me, though two of the top scripts on the industry black list last year had this trope,...

Re: Which screenplays do you recommend reading?

A few that come to mind:

Men In Black - Extremely clever.

Panic Room - Great example of how to develop conflict and character arcs in a single location.

Back to the Future - Just a perfect...

Re: Nicholl 2020

I didn't enter anything last year.

I'm going hard at it this year. Writing two new features and re-submitting one old one that got top 10% one year and top 15% another year. I've had four different...

Re: Uncut Gems

Saw it last week. Really enjoyed it. The 52% fresh score from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes is a bit puzzling. I feel like it delivered on the premise. Not sure what the audience was expecting that they...

Re: Star Wars

Messy. Felt like they tried to do way too much and at the same time didn't know exactly what they wanted to do. The second half of this movie was all over the place.

I think almost all of Disney's...

Re: Ford vs. Ferrari

I liked it more than Rush, which didn't really wow me. I remember thinking Rush's plot didn't work very well, but I haven't seen it since it came out.

Ford vs. Ferrari

Just saw it was surprisingly gobsmacked. It's totally formulaic and a bit too heavy on the "rah rah" American cultural supremacy jingoism, which I expected going in, but it delivers a satisfying...

Re: Parasite

Caught it last night. Enjoyed it. Great pacing. 2+ hours, but it feels trim. Not a lot of wasted movement in this one.

From the perspective of a writer, what I appreciated was the efficiency of the...

Re: El Camino - anyone else underwhelmed?

I liked it a lot. It's a nostalgic victory lap for people who loved the show.

Not a great standalone movie, but it closed Jesse's story in a more conclusive way and did nothing to diminish the...

Re: Joker

Didn't hate it. Didn't love it. It's a Taxi Driver and King of Comedy homage with a coat of clown paint.

One thing is bothering me though as I reflect on this movie a few days later: The Joker was...

Re: Ad Astra

Beautiful cinematography. Striking action sequences.

Didn't really love the ending and found the theme a touch hokey.

Still a good movie. Those user scores are puzzling. I guess maybe if you have...

Re: Franklin Leonard

My competition is Fitzgerald, Shakespeare, and Homer.

And honestly, they need to step up their game. It's been a while since they wrote anything on my level.

Re: Franklin Leonard

I'm thinking the wannabe screenwriter game mimics the SF and Yukon gold rushes in the sense that the number of people getting rich selling services to the "miners" is higher than the number of people...

Re: Austin 2019

Readers are a crapshoot in general. I've had that type of thing happen many times. First reader: "Wow, this dialogue is great. Some of the best dialogue I've ever read." Next reader: "It was a good...

Austin 2019

Has anyone else entered? Have you heard anything back yet? I know notifications should be trickling out soon.

Re: "Bad" Movies You Love

Good call on Surviving the Game. It's pure entertainment.

It's extremely basic and corny, but you can't say it's not entertaining.

The whole cast dials up the cheese to 11.

Re: "Bad" Movies You Love

Commando has been a not-very guilty pleasure for a long time. It's so over-the-top corny and unrealistic that I think it only works if you take it as a comedy.
