Re: Archetype vs stereotype

I've written and read enough about the 3-Act structure, especially on DD.

Re: Archetype vs stereotype

100%

I enjoy watching the gurus twist and squirm when asked about PULP FICTION, THE ENGLISH PATIENT, BABEL and other non-linear films. Try applying Save The Cat to SLACKER. When confronted with...

Re: Single Cam vs Multi Cam sitcoms

I don't think it matters. So long as you're close to the format. Like Will and Jeff said above there's a lot of variation in format, and Disney's looking for creative writers not a script...

Re: If I offered you $50ooo per episode...

Bizarre? Yes.
Riveting? No.

The reason, I think, is that fiction and true-crime are fundamentally different genres that capture our attention in different ways (I'm using genre here in the semiotic...

Re: Writer/Directors and the WGA

Congrats Travis.

I totally agree with Manfred (can we call you Manny?) on this. The WGAW is incredibly helpful, but I suspect they're mostly working from home at this point; I know my comms dept....

Odd Couple Analysis

Jeff's mention of THE ODD COUPLE (the original) got me thinking and I looked into the show on IMDB. Here are some basic stats:

1970-1975
ABC
114 Episodes
Tony Randall and Jack Klugman were in...

Re: Amount of characters for Sitcom - Minimum / Maximum?

By existential I meant that you can't kill off a main character like you can in a feature, or substantially change their situation. You're absolutely right about getting back to the status...

Re: Amount of characters for Sitcom - Minimum / Maximum?

You're heading in the right direction, but I think the Protagonist/Antagonist model might be throwing you off. A novel or a feature often has a single main character plus helpers here and there, and...

Re: Effect of the Coronavirus

I agree.

Anecdotally, There was a SUPERNATURAL fan convention in Vegas this weekend, and one of the stars threatened to not show up, but was kind of shamed into it by other stars who did. Tickets...

Re: Abrams Artists Signs WGA CoC

I don't how much packaging is going on with the hyphenates, but I know that feature writers have been disadvantaged the most business-wise during this action. TV writers tend to use their...

Re: Abrams Artists Signs WGA CoC

Where it gets murky is with writer-producers and writer-directors. I've heard there are many hyphenates that are still being repped in their non-writer capacities by their former big4 agents.

Re: Can a script be produced more than once?

I would also recommend visiting the website of, and possibly giving a call to, The Pierce Law Firm (https://www.piercelawgroupllp.com/about). They rep comedians and writers mostly and are very...

Re: Can a script be produced more than once?

Firstly, congrats on writing something that resonates with people especially other artists.

Secondly and most importantly, I am not a lawyer. That said, the answer to your question lies, I believe,...

Re: Exorcising Cliche

So the bottom line is that no pigs or demons were harmed in the making of the New Testament. That's so good to know. ;)

Re: 1917

Agreed, also production design was incredible.

This was my big problem. Also knowing what a bloodbath WWI was, and the 1600 British soldiers involved in an inconsequential half-battle was a drop in...

Re: How Does Being a Writer / Director Work?

Sometimes. Sometimes they write from a pitch or rewrite from an existing project. Sometimes they have writing partners like Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor. Often they have producing partners, or...

Re: Opening scene

100% agree!

Agree for the most part. The only time I think it might work for me is if you are telling an alternate timeline/reality where your story diverges from history. Then if you use the stock...

Re: Want and Need in a Slasher movie

I'm not much of a slasher fan, but I would imagine those other goals come from either a B-Story or it's baked into the premise. In Halloween JLC's character is burdened with keeping the kids she is...

Unless I'm missing something, where did they state they want you to write for free? If they were open to optioning or buying one of your scripts, I would assume that they said "with" and really meant...

Not a book, but a really good resource is Todd Garner's Producer's Guide Podcast (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-producers-guide-todd-garner-hollywoods-elite/id1363232295).

However, in this situation there are two other people that can, however dubiously, claim partial ownership and they have a whole room full of people that can...

Re: Continuing on after the workshop

Hard to say for me because we're talking about Australia and copyright in the commonwealth is a bit different than here in the US.
