Re: Pitching as a Lottery

Re: How important is voice in screenwriting?

Sometimes a script will have a great premise or plot turns or set pieces or whatever - something that makes a studio think there's a film there - but the execution isn't great. Those scripts can be...

Re: How important is voice in screenwriting?

In selling an individual script, no. In getting hired as a writer on other projects, absolutely.

Re: Reputable agents/managers charging a fee to read

If he really wanted to whittle down potential clients, he'd just move to a referrals only system. This feels like a guy trying to keep the lights on.

Re: Ocean's 8 -- Here We Go Again

Can female critics appreciate films with male leads?

Re: Reputable agents/managers charging a fee to read

It probably goes without saying, but if a management company needs to chase reading fees to supplement its income, it's not successful. (Let alone - if a manager has *time* to provide coverage, he's...

Re: Reputable agents/managers charging a fee to read

Actually against rules for agents to do this. Who are these companies, if you don’t mind saying?

Someone wants to read your script. Send it. ;)

What's the downside of sending it?

Re: Is it acceptable...

FWIW, I wrote a spec that had a recently invented sport with unique equipment. I knew 99% of readers wouldn't have seen it. So I described it, but I also put in as an aside something like "[This is...

Re: Amazon Studios

I doubt they’re putting many resources into reading scripts at this point.

Re: Conflict - How important it really is?

Absolutely - Gump tackles a different theme, but I don't think it's quite as empty as some others. I think it's a meditation on destiny - the last line (which I've quoted before) is:

Re: Conflict - How important it really is?

There's a long tradition of naifs that don't change, but the world around them does. I wouldn't say "Being There" was bad writing, for example.

Re: How important is voice in screenwriting?

Of course! I'm slightly disappointed there isn't a bigger archive I hadn't found there are some old discussions about theme that got wiped out in the boski rage-quit that I'd love to see.

Re: How important is voice in screenwriting?

This is getting weird. Assuage my huge ego and tell me where I screwed up:

I searched for every post that had the word "fret" in it (there are 101), and it is not there.

I also searched for...

Re: How important is voice in screenwriting?

I'm definitely not accusing you of lying. It just struck me as odd that I couldn't pull up the post, since I'm pretty good at searching. For example, if you search for the word "fret," which you...

Re: How important is voice in screenwriting?

I'd love a link to the thread, because I can't find it. (It also pre-dates my joining here by a couple of years, but maybe I had an older account?)

But assuming I did write that... I like it that I...

Re: Teaming up with an A-list producer

I don't think it's a bad idea if they're A-list. The troubles tend to increase the less legit a producer is - they're desperate to hold onto material that they really shouldn't have a claim...

Re: Can someone really do this?

This feels like a cluster**** from every direction.

If you leave the other person's name on, no matter what you say to people, no one is going to treat it as a solo sample if there's a co-writer...

Re: Getting an advisor on board

It certainly could go that way. But I think I'd be cautious about taking on a writing partner without great deliberation - if the script gets traction/notice, it would make it harder for you to...

Re: Getting an advisor on board

Why not just reach out and say you're writing something set in the world he knows about, and you'd love to interview him? That might be enough to get what you need.
