Re: Where to stay in LA?

Not sure if you're a map person, but here are a couple of maps that show where the various neighborhoods are.

Re: Bring Me The Head (fun short script contest)

I'm considering doing this, and I have the germ of an idea, but so far that's all. It's possible the deadline will slip by before I get beyond having just a germ of an idea. Or it might not, and I...

Re: Grammar question: adjective as a noun.

I've usually seen "faithful" treated as a plural when used as a noun. "The Faithful are..." "One of the Faithful is..." That's how I would do it if it were me.

Re: How 'bout a DDP meet up...

Yes, I was at the Red Rock one! That was a good one. I don't know why I didn't make the one at the Formosa Cafe, since I would have been around. I must have had a conflict. I think I was at that one...

Re: How 'bout a DDP meet up...

I would try to make this if I were still in LA, but alas... I was at one or two of the previous DD get-togethers, way back. Hope everybody has a great time.

Re: Future Competitions

Originally I also took it as the character on the run with his own severed head. But now I'm thinking of it as someone else's head, and "cooked-up" is giving me a fairly disgusting idea of what he...

Re: Privacy when writing

Don't write in the presence of others. At the very least, sit in a corner and face the room so no one can see what you're working on. It doesn't seem strange to me that you would find it difficult to...

I haven't done a writing exercise here in a really long time. But that doesn't mean I won't at some point. :D

Re: What do you think determines rewatch value?

This is going to vary by individual, so that makes it hard for a writer who might be consciously trying to instill rewatch value into a script. I'm pretty sure you can't.

For me, it's character and...

Re: Skipping scenes

Don't write the scenes. Figure out what vital information they were supposed to convey, and work it in somewhere else.

I bought your novella not too long ago (I'm not allowing myself to read it or any other book until I finish my current writing project). So I can't take advantage of this. But it's okay. I don't...

Re: Has this happened to you in Final Draft?

Cool, I learned something new here too. I learned why this happens and how to replicate it.

Glad this was the only problem, Late Night!

Re: Has this happened to you in Final Draft?

Have you bumped anything when this happens? Can you still see the outline of your program on the desktop, although the desktop itself shows through? This happens to me sometimes in Windows 7. I don't...

Re: What are some common dialogue mistakes you've noticed?

On a fairly mechanical level, I find dialogue that repeatedly trails off mid-sentence or mid-thought to be ineffective. A few trail-offs here or there, okay, but a whole scene where nobody finishes a...

Re: The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug

I was thinking of skipping it (and, in fact, will be doing so) because the tone is all wrong. The Hobbit isn't supposed to be a mini-LOTR. It's supposed to be its own, lighter thing.

But I'm...

Re: Learning from bad scripts; where can you find them?

As an aside, I've found I sometimes learn even more from scripts that aren't so much terribly bad as just not there yet. The really bad ones have EVERYTHING wrong with them. With the better -- but...

Re: A DD'er "stole" Scriptshadow's newsletter?

Doesn't mean people read 'em. I may be narrow-minded, but if I pick up a novel or short story in English* and the writer isn't using quotation marks for dialogue, I drop it again. I like my...
