Re: Need Advice on Spec Deal

You're right w/r/t the repless writer part, especially when combined with the non-union $1m production part.

SoCalScribe might have some good advice here.

Re: Need Advice on Spec Deal

(There are many legit attorneys who will take on a client with a deal this small for 5% if they see potential for growth and significant future earnings.)

(Don't take this advice.)

Entertainment attorneys are used to how things work. As long as they know that a deal is forthcoming, they'll start the negotiations with the buyer.

Re: Writing Coverage vs. Your Own Writing

I was a full time reader for many, many years. For the first year or two, it was useful and valuable. Every year after that, it got a little worse, until by the end, the job had sapped all of my...

Re: Scripts/movies where character arcs before start of story?

Well, yes, if there had been a cliched arc, then that would've been ... cliched.

But a good arc? Well-executed? That's the difference between TAKEN and DIE HARD.

Same goes for theme.

Re: Scripts/movies where character arcs before start of story?

Just think how great TAKEN would've been if Neeson's character actually had undergone some sort of emotional arc?

Re: Scripts/movies where character arcs before start of story?

Re: TAKEN -- it's also possible that it's a movie where the character arc just isn't executed all that well.

Re: How much input do short-film directors have on feature-version development?

Depends on the project, the director, the producers, the studio, but it's usually like any other development process when there's a director attached -- close collaboration with all parties, with the...

Re: Difference between (O.S.) and (O.C.)

I prefer to drill a little differently on this stuff than David K, probably owing to my years as a reader and preferring quick clarity -- I don't use VO for TV or radio. I specify (ON TV) or (ON...

Re: I got a 9 on the Black List -- now what?

This is the pull-quote you want to pay attention to, guys.

Read between the lines: screenwriting is excessively difficult, and there are very few truly great specs out there.

Re: Difference between (O.S.) and (O.C.)

V.O. is specifically dialogue that is not contained anywhere within the context of the space of the scene.

O.S. and O.C. is dialogue that could be found by the camera if it looked hard enough.

For...

Re: Best spec agent

I'll be interested to see how Craig and John define "sale," because for the most part, the sales reported at places like Go Into The Story and Tracking-Board are in fact options, and for far far less...

Re: Why all the meetings?

This is why it is so beneficial to live in Los Angeles -- a few meetings a week for three or four months is a lot more manageable than 25 meetings in 5 days.

In the end, this is a business about...

Re: Making story-time clear when cutting back/forth between US and Australia

Don't worry about it. Just write it. It's fine. If someone claims that this doesn't make sense to them (or, even worse, says "Well, *I* get it but you have to change this because I know that *other*...

Re: Did IMDBpro kill searching for lit managers/agents?

In my experience, "literary" only refers to writers. The designation is fluid, though -- talent reps can rep writers, and literary reps can rep non-writers -- but "literary" is only used to refer to...

Re: Did IMDBpro kill searching for lit managers/agents?

In Hollywood parlance, "literary reps" refers to people who represent screenwriters.

Re: Did IMDBpro kill searching for lit managers/agents?

Did IMDBpro ever have a lit manager or lit agent specific listing?

Look up writers whose careers you aspire to. See who their reps are. Seek out those reps.

Yes, coincidence.

Sci-fi has seen something of a resurgence the last five or ten years. It has nothing to do with Star Wars. I have theories for why this has happened -- sci-fi is one of those...

Re: What's the best tracking board?

Trackingb.

Tracking-board suspended my account and refused to refund my money because I asked them a question on twitter. I would never recommend anyone subscribe to them.
