Re: Franklin Leonard

Things may be dismal, but at least you should make an attempt at being accurate.

About 5% of Nicholl entries advance to the quarterfinals each year.

For about a decade, approximately 150 scripts...

Re: Nicholl 2019

Since "facts" have been provided by several posters, let me state a few as well as a few of my own opinions:

I retired in January 2018. At that time Joan Wai took over my position as the...

Re: Austin 2018

Congrats to Wenonah.

Not sure of the exact number but there are at least five same year Austin/Nicholl winners:

Max Adams 1994 (with different scripts)
Jeff Williams 2009
Andrew Lanham 2010
Dion...

Re: Why I Hate Script Contests And So Should You

Over the years, thrillers have done quite well in the Nicholl competition, and a number have earned fellowships for their writers.

If you visit the Nicholl ceremonies page...

Re: Why I Hate Script Contests And So Should You

Thanks for the kind words.

No, basing a script on a person's life is not an adaptation - unless your script were based on a single source about that person. So long as a script is based on multiple...

Re: Why I Hate Script Contests And So Should You

As some folks may know, I've retired and so no longer have any connection to the Nicholl competition. Still, I have some sense of what scripts reached the finals over the years - and overwhelmingly...

Re: A Little Contest Paranoia For Ya

Thanks for the suggestions. Most are not feasible given the current state of our database and a lack of resources that makes it difficult to introduce changes.

Re: A Little Contest Paranoia For Ya

In part, to begin to recover the costs of modifying the Nicholl database to make the comments available.

In part, to break even on the cost of reading (we spend more on reading than entry fees...

Re: A Little Contest Paranoia For Ya

During the Nicholl Fellowships competition, readers never know whether the writer of any script opted to purchase comments. We also assign scripts without knowing whether comments have been...

Re: Nicholl 2016

Main reason is that the competition is continuing and we wait until all the quarterfinal reads have been added in. We also don't have the ability to separate the comments into groups for advancing...

Re: Nicholl 2016

It is. There are nine different groupings spread across the emails.

Quarterfinalist
Next 100 scripts
Top 10%
Top 15%
Top 20%
Two positive scores
One high score (generating a third read)
One positive...

Re: Nicholl 2016

Thanks for jumping in ahead of me.

Our Marketing/PR team moved us off of Thursday last year due to a conflict with the AFI Festival opening night (or was it the closing night?). This year, no...

Just to clarify a few things:

We're still in the first round of the competition. What was posted was that we had nearly completed second reads and would soon be moving onto third reads. All scripts...

Re: Anybody submitted to Austin this year?

The origins of the AFF competition's rep (I think the story goes something like this):

In 1994, the first year of the competition, conference and festival, Max Adams learned she won a Nicholl...

Re: Nicholl 2016

We had a few slow-to-confirm collaborators holding up a final tally. The Academy social media folks should post the final total sometime soon.

Re: Nicholl 2016

Thanks for the suggestions. The Nicholl scoring system has been modified in various ways over the past 30 years and undoubtedly will continue to be into the future.

We make every attempt...

In addition to what happens at Nicholl, I know what happens at a number of other major competitions. This is patently false for those competitions.

Since a number of competitions offer reader...
