Re: Fast Question

With book adaptations, I would recommend the wga treatment model. This ensures about a 40% payment before you commence first draft. It also allows for early notes on the treatment which can result...

Hah. My last one took 11 months.

Re: Hell on Wheels, any good?

Not as good as deadwood. But still one of my fav shows on TV.

Re: Halloween 2014 results

Well done. Congrats to all. Regardless of placement, the important thing is you are working.

It was one of these Done Deal competitions that actually landed me a manager back in the day.

Re: Finding the momentum to finish an outline?

I use 8 sequences with a approximately four points per sequence then revise for theme. Far less daunting that way.

If I'm really stuck, I write the scene that made me want to spend the next 8...

Re: Producer/Exec Notes

The only thing that raised a flag for me was "took it upon himself". The people I work with always always ask any writer they work with if they can take a stab at something before doing it.

Re: Umm, zombies I guess.

The cannon has strongly deviated from the "don't say zombie" rule in recent years.

A large part of this is from the "sharknado" channel that is self-aware in the spoof context. They can get away...

Re: Where to Pitch/Send/Give Away a Web Series?

Good luck. Just don't get any dollar signs in your head. I briefly had a top show at Koldcast and the pay was negligible. There are of course exceptions, but IMO, the real value is the experience...

Re: Opening your script with the ending.

I don't think there is a right or wrong answer to this.

Personally, I prefer to bookend with a mirror scene that reflects the completion of the hero's journey.

Re: Web Series Copyright

Things are copyrighted as soon as you make them. Registering with the library of Congress is what gives you the standing to sue in federal court.

Sounds like what you need to worry about, is other...

Re: Fairly Legal

As an attorney... I don't care for most legal shows. They do this one right. Maybe she is just too easy on the eye for me to be objective though.

Re: Screenwriting at the Professional Level

Stellar post. The truth is hard. Most people just don't have it. At the same time.... Passion is: not when you can't think of doing anything else... it is when you can't comprehend why everyone...

Re: Taking a Spec Out

Going wide is sort of like being in a really long, drawn-out beauty pageant.

You don't know exactly what the judges are looking for.

You don't know if they truly believe you.

You just have to hope...

Re: Success in Screenwriting without living in HW

I think that if you are outside of L.A., you really need to write with an eye towards a commercial script that can go wide. This of course also entails having a rep willing to take it wide. From...

Re: Reworking a pitched TV show

Reading between the lines... it sounds like they want you to focus on world building.

While not necessarily the standard anymore, we always go in with a one pager and a fully formed bible...

Re: Blades of Glory (ruined by sticking to structure?)

As a sub-genre, sports comedies usually have a very specific structure to go along with the ragtag/haunted players and battered skipper archetypes.

Blades of glory was no different and actually...

Re: Best Script Coverage to Generate Queries?

To me, having numerous established screenwriters chime in on a concept is invaluable.

Who wants to spend three months working on a script that people simply won't respond to?

While I like to think...

Re: Instead Of The Same Old RomCom....

It doesn't get any more formulaic than a rom-com. To me, their recent/ongoing failure is due to a huge amount of predictability. Audiences are on to the formula. As such, IMO, the all hope is lost...

Re: Agent jokes

Modified this one myself for fun.

How many agents does it take to screw in a
light bulb?

bulbs anymore. But have you considered turning
your light...

Re: Specific Comedy Don'ts In Screenwriting

While not a rule, I generally try to use the drama test. Would this concept also work as a drama? Just as in drama, relatable tension is everything.

Can the audience walk a mile in your...

Mine was a truly sad story involving... too sad to tell on this thread. Anywhoo, the writing started then and the screenwriting happened several years later.

The point is that once the trigger...

Re: Comedy Question: How Do You Know?

I think this is just one of those things where either you "have it" or you don't.

Only numerous reads will tell. Your "no's" will hopefully start with "very funny, but....".
