I'm also bothered by faux finishes on walls, they always seem over done, particularly in stylish thrillers or horror movies where they're trying to grunge...

"Glossy" is a legitimate complaint depending on the genre, particularly horror and drama. Tone and atmosphere are diminished when the gloss is present, in my respectful opinion of course.
