Re: Had a bit to drink. Bear with me

I once had a literary agent who did pretty much the same thing, except that after I waited eight months to see if he'd read my novel (by then I'd published four of them, repped by another agent who'd...

Re: Time it takes your agent to read material?

Following the retirement of my original agent (after placing four books with publishers), I had an agent who, on one occasion, when after eight months I wrote (this was in pre-email days, when...

Re: Reese Witherspoon, Pacific Standard email?

My forthcoming novel, out in January 2020, is going to her company in the next few weeks via my book-to-film agent. No rucksacks, but the main character is a 40-year-old bestselling writer. Things...

Re: Story Into Screenplay

Though I'm not a short story writer (I've written three, published two), I once sent one to Buford at The New Yorker. I received back a personal letter saying I'd almost made the cut, and there was...

Re: Adapting scripts into a novel series

This is a very good point. Too many authors—even published ones—optimistically launch into a series, have volume one published, watch it die, then hear from their publisher that they're dropping him....

Re: Adapting scripts into a novel series

Sure. Nothing I've written even approaches an epic post-apocalyptic dystopian story, but what I do first is turn the script inside-out and determine what is it really about?

And then I basically...

Re: Story Into Screenplay

Writing here as someone who has been a full-time writer for 40 years, and who's published seven (soon eight) novels, and who's also been writing teleplays (for the UK market) and scripts for just as...

Re: Pilot vs Novel and the Author's Rights

I agree with Comic that editing today can be on the shoddy side, especially in the area of copyediting. I have been lucky that all of my books have had first-rate editors, and the one I'm working...

Re: Pilot vs Novel and the Author's Rights

Right. Remember that producers and execs see publishing—not self-publishing—as the gatekeeper. If the work is successful in one medium, with decent sales, then half their work is done. It's been...

Re: Pilot vs Novel and the Author's Rights

My forthcoming novel, The Drowning, began as a screenplay. My manager shopped it around, had the odd nibble or two, and then we let it drop. But I knew I'd come up with a novel approach to the whole...

Re: Optioning a novel question

Writing as a published novelist (and as a screenwriter) who has twice been optioned, I think it's important to note that authors often appoint their literary agents to be the ongoing overseers of the...

Re: The Witch

And I read that the buildings in the film were constructed using very old timber and built by craftspeople who'd studied how the original structures were built.

Re: The Witch

Ah, but they weren't citizens yet! (There was probably no official designation as such.) Lots of towns in New England have British antecedents. I live in an area north of Boston where our house,...

Re: The Witch

Not at all. After all, the British came to New England and settled there in the 17th century.

Re: Agent Question

In publishing, such a work would be considered "soiled," i.e. it's been read and rejected, and as such would be unsellable by a new rep. One possible way to work around this is to retitle it and...

Re: The Big Sick

Our daughter recommended it, as she's seen Kumail Nanjiani in L.A. comedy clubs (and he lives a few blocks from her), and we loved it. It's a very honest film without ever once turning mawkish.

Re: Europe-based American writer

You're most welcome, and I have to agree with your strategy. When I first arrived in London, in 1977, I had a teleplay and a (not-very-good) 3-act stage play. I queried several top agents in London,...

Re: Europe-based American writer

I'm also an American screenwriter and novelist who lived for several years in England back in the late 70s and 80s. On the basis of a spec teleplay, I was signed by an agent in London, who submitted...

Re: Dunkirk

Just saw it in IMAX, which I very much recommend. This is a big film in every way, and a very noisy one, but then, again, so is war. Beautifully done and built on the most economical script I could...

This may not be the correct forum to post this in, but my copy of the Authors Guild Bulletin arrived today, and this was in it. May be of interest to anyone (which means pretty much most writers at...

Oh, and one of my novels is being adapted for TV, and the producers wants me to be part of the writing team.

Re: Having problems

I began writing in my twenties, was first published (it was my 13th effort) when I was 35, began writing teleplays for the British market when I was 24, and even after returning to the States...

Re: Contacted by CAA agent - novelist

My experience, though it's somewhat different. My NY literary agent sent a pdf of a still-unpublished novel to his intellectual property rights agent in L.A. He read it, loved it, and began shopping...

Re: Entertainment Attorney Fees

Yes, my attorney required a retainer, but only as a signed document appointing him as attorney. No money was requested or expected. And, yes, he charges 5% like the others do.
