Re: Archetype vs stereotype

Stereotypes can be negative but not necessarily so. Stereotypes are simply widely held - and justifiably so - representations of demographics due to the prevalence of common traits. Where they become...

Re: After The Trauma. What Does The Audience Want?

I'll watch your vid in a min but straight from the off I'll say people will want escapism: comedies, sci-fi and superheroes.

Re: Archetype vs stereotype

Does he, though? I'm sure you'd think he looks as you expect if he was bearded and stout like Ahab, or if he had a patch over an eye and missing teeth like a 17th century pirate, or was simply...

Re: Archetype vs stereotype

It's vice versa - stereotypes are borne of archetypes.

Re: Social Commentary Disguised...

The It Follows social commentary angle doesn't work as the writer/director purposefully set out to invert the horror trope of 'promiscuous characters die, virginial ones live' - not send out a...

Re: The Lodge

The trailer did indeed look good and it advertised a horror film not a play-esque drama.

The Lodge

Absolute rubbish.
No suspense. No horror. No slow burn.
Just rubbish.

If you liked Hereditary then you'll love this.

Re: How to deal with many characters in a scene

I think you're trying to provide a solution to a problem that doesn't exist.

Re: The Gentlemen

Just rewatched this. What a film. Great characters and even greater dialogue. Tarantino has some corker one-liners and monologues but The Gentlemen is relentless in its sheer poetry. from solo...

Re: Horror Movies

Ditto! As for the scene in the sequel of her inside the well and climbing up - pure nightmare fuel.

Re: The Invisible Man

And even allowing for that, it makes no sense why she was perfectly okay and unaffected throughout the rest of the film. No bandages, no surgery, no scars - I doubt they reshot the entire last 30...

Re: The Invisible Man

No they don't. Neither was the scene cut from this film. She just magically did not bleed or suffer. The ratings board - far more liberal than the US -has no influence on how the plot plays out after...

Re: Horror Movies

Big horror fan. Nothing good since the 80s, really, save for the Dawn and Texas remakes in the early 2000s.

Re: Uncut Gems

I never once demeaned your criticism of Howard's arc (or lack of).

Stop taking things so personally.

I watched it 2-3 weeks ago. A good film with a couple of moments that undermined it - specifically.....

Re: Uncut Gems

Each to their own but this perspective puzzles me. You have to 'like' someone to enjoy their journey, to enjoy the film? And you can only 'like' people you find virtuous in some way? I don't mean any...

Re: Writing copyrighted material

Thanks. I never knew you could make a film about someone without the rights. That's very informative and opens up an avenue I hadn't previously considered. I assume it's safe for a non-rights holder...

Re: Writing copyrighted material

I'm grateful for the honest, knowledgeable, industry-based advice. Not so for the counter-arguments based to things I never said or posited.

For the avoidance of doubt, I'm not going to write an...

Re: Writing copyrighted material

I don't know the legalities around real people as it's not an area I'm interested in but I've heard of people owning the rights to someone's life story (rather than an autobiography) so have you any...

Re: Writing copyrighted material

But if the writer is good?

Sure, a good writer can make up their own stuff but what's bad about them writing a fab script for existing IP?

Whereas writing the next Elm Street installment is...

Re: Writing copyrighted material

Assuming the writer has talent, though?

No one - and I mean no one - is going to take legal action because someone used their IP as a calling card. They'll understand the reasoning and that there's...
