Re: "Tell me about yourself"

Haha this is very reminiscent of my experience. When I'd utter the phrase "corporate finance" in my meetings you could just feel their attention dull. It's almost like they're thinking "oh, he's just...

Re: What's The Point Of It All?

I loved Malcolm's take on this business in an episode of Scriptnotes a few weeks back. He said you'll never get the personal satisfaction you crave from this business. Even in success you don't get...

Re: General boredom

That's advice I'd give to any young aspiring writer. Learn a skill that the marketplace actually wants then write on nights and weekends. Get a nursing degree, learn to code. Then come out to LA and...

Re: Going out wide?

If memory serves my manager felt Tuesday was a better day because you're not lumped in with the others going out on Monday.

Re: Going out wide?

It took me a week to know my fate. We went out on a Tuesday to 20+ producers. The passes start rolling in immediately. Usually within the first few days you know if you're lighting the town on fire...

Re: My concept sold today

He told me not to sweat it. He said if the movie were to get made that would be a problem but right now they're only at the pitch phase. He's reading it this weekend and we're set to talk on Monday.

Re: My concept sold today

I believe it was Mazin who said it best, and I'm paraphrasing, "agents and managers are great at selling material, not at telling you what you should be writing."

I think when you first get out here...

Re: My concept sold today

I think that's the hardest part to swallow. The time lost.

The good news is though a deal is in place, the script hasn't been written yet so it's not like prodco's are going to read the logline...

Re: My concept sold today

I'm working on scenes for a new script now. It's the only thing that makes me feel better. Upward and onward, as they say.

Re: My concept sold today

Thanks for the pep talk Mad.

Changing the protag or setting is always an option. Unfortunately, the arc is very male-centric and every set-piece and gag relies on the Mexico/US relationship (drug...

My concept sold today

I worked on it for a year. The story of a dumb yet earnest border guard who is deported to Mexico and has to try and sneak back into the US. I finished the script last week and sent it to my manager...

Re: Moonrise Kingdom

Well I just asked my buddy Pete, and he said "yeah dude, Max Fischer is f*cking epic. Like the greatest character ever."

So there.

Re: Moonrise Kingdom

What separates Rushmore from Anderson's other works is Max Fischer. One of the greatest characters in cinema history. No other Anderson character has been nearly as compelling.

Re: At what point should I add an agent to the team?

So if a client who doesn't have an agent comes to you and expresses interest in adding one to the team, is it customary for you two work with them on referrals/setting up meetings? Or is it generally...

Re: At what point should I add an agent to the team?

Good discussion question McNamara.

Same question for Michael. If you have an agentless client, when do you look to add one to the team? Is it based on where you feel that client is with their...

Re: Writing for people who wimp out.

In my meetings with Imagine they've only brought up paid work. But I've had more than a few "we're looking for someone to write this on spec" from other legitimate shingles around town.

Re: ICM Fires 3 Feature Lit Agents

And just a few days ago they promoted 2 up to Feature Lit.

I'm assuming these 3 were considered Hal's people and the 2 newbies are Lacy's people. I'll also assume that wherever Hal lands, these 3...

Re: ***** and PG-13

My script went out as a hard-R comedy. Fvck, pvssy, everything. The producer we set it up with saw it as PG-13 so I cut the fvcks but left in two non-sexual pvssies.

I guess my advice would be to...
