Re: WGA Inclusion Report

Interesting articles re Black Panther and the black woman entertainment attorney.

Thing is -- we've seen the industry announce major commitments to diversity every few years. Last big promise was...

Re: Picking Right Idea

Personally, I only develop concepts I would pay to watch. Then again my taste in films is really eclectic and what I enjoy ranges from blockbuster action to small, arty drama. So I'm not sure if...

Re: Protags: Likable? Relatable? Empathetic? Or is intriguing enough?

Getting back on topic...

For me, this discussion has shown that every reader/audience filters characters through their own personal experiences. While FA4 and I were unable to empathize with Walter...

Re: Protags: Likable? Relatable? Empathetic? Or is intriguing enough?

As I said, I watched season 1 then lost interest so I barely recall those details.

Thing is -- I totally get why the show was so popular. A mild mannered teacher who followed all the rules of life...

Re: Protags: Likable? Relatable? Empathetic? Or is intriguing enough?

Not only do I agree with you FA4, I find it bizarre that Sundown's "integral point" is based on the wild assumption that each of us "cheers on" the violence of protags like Rambo and Dirty Harry....

Re: Protags: Likable? Relatable? Empathetic? Or is intriguing enough?

Frankly -- after reading your first paragraph that posits I "simply can't be human" if I don't empathize with Walter White, I stopped reading the rest of your earlier comment.

And now that you...

Re: Protags: Likable? Relatable? Empathetic? Or is intriguing enough?

Huh? I simply can't be human if I can't empathize with Walter White? Whoa.

And aren't you contradicting yourself when your first comment in the thread was:

Re: Protags: Likable? Relatable? Empathetic? Or is intriguing enough?

For me, it was so excessive, so fast and so over the top, it bordered on cartoonish. As I said above in my reply to FA4, he went from a mild-mannered science teacher to a sociopath virtually...

Re: Protags: Likable? Relatable? Empathetic? Or is intriguing enough?

Boldface 1:

Well, I was able to watch as much as I did because it was intriguing to watch a mild-mannered science teacher "go bad." But I didn't empathize with (or relate to) him because he was...

Re: Protags: Likable? Relatable? Empathetic? Or is intriguing enough?

The "we" referred to the person I was responding to with whom I agreed.

Re: Protags: Likable? Relatable? Empathetic? Or is intriguing enough?

It's interesting reading the comments because there are certain "bad" characters I can't ever relate to or identify with: drug dealers selling death and murderers.

I may find them interesting or...

Re: Protags: Likable? Relatable? Empathetic? Or is intriguing enough?

Hannibal Lecter is a very good example. But I consider him a combo co-protag/antag for Clarice who is the protag. Dexter of the same name TV show is another example. For me, these characters are...

Re: Protags: Likable? Relatable? Empathetic? Or is intriguing enough?

Agree. I did write a sentence in my OP pointing out Shakespeare's history plays had unlikable protags for that very reason. Then I deleted it.

And my watching Billions is voyeurism for the same...

Re: Protags: Likable? Relatable? Empathetic? Or is intriguing enough?

I agree. That's why I asked if intriguing is enough.

Wolf of Wall Street is a good example. The Talented Mr. Ripley is another. We just want to see how it works out but we're not rooting for the...

Protags: Likable? Relatable? Empathetic? Or is intriguing enough?

As a writer, I find the characters in the TV series Billions an amazing accomplishment -- especially the co-leads: Bobby Axelrod and Chuck Rhoades.

Created by Brian Koppelman (who once participated...

Re: Judging Your Own Work

I think it's a matter of being able to judge your own competence at something. Some people simply score themselves at a much higher level of competency than they actually possess.

In another...

Re: Question for our British members

Thanks all. Now it make sense. I couldn't understand why three well written British shows would use the "person in the trunk" scene if there was a lever. Thanks again.

Reps don't walk on water. Your original scene may be the better one. What you were asked to add my well be a note behind the note. Make your original scene funnier. Since my day job workload has been...

Question for our British members

Thanks to Netflix and Amazon Prime, we've been watching a lot of British TV and movies during the stay-at-home COVID situation.

My question: do cars in England have that glow-in-dark lever inside...

Re: Plough through or correct as you go?

I was going to bring up sequencing in the 3-act thread then decided against opening that can of worms. I use the sequence method. For me, it's more organic.

I admire your outlining discipline which...

You like being the contrarian, I see.

I'll cry uncle and concede you don't have to literally destroy and toss out your first idea for an opening scene. However, running with it and never even...

Re: Plough through or correct as you go?

Whether or not Bono was aiming his digs at Cyfress, I agree with your point: "...why bother entering the thread just to smash plates and kick the dog?"

As for your take on Jeff's "24 hours" comment,...
