Re: Bring yourself to your scripts

I'm not understanding the confusion. Writers observe the world around them and the people in it and draw from that to create their own worlds and characters, whether closer in nature to their...

Re: Bring yourself to your scripts

I think of writers as photographers with words. Yes there are some things that are our unique experiences, but the rest of it is about being present in the world and observing it and choosing which...

I don't know what anyone's point is, but you are all making certain people very, very rich.

Re: Loving your character too much

@nguyensquared: Many thanks for the input and you make some very good points. The one thing though: I DON'T know yet what this character would and wouldn't do. I'm discovering that as I go along....

Re: Loving your character too much

Here's the gist:

-I do discover things about my characters as I go along. I would hope we all do. For me, that's one of the most exciting parts of writing. I literally just gave my main character a...

Re: New Philosophy

I was going to say, isn't there a natural gut instinct that kicks in? Like a voice in your head telling you, OMG, I have GOT to write this! Or, OMG, I have GOT to tell BFF my idea so we can crank it...

Re: Loving your character too much

I'm going to write it and see what my gut tells me. I know what I want to achieve, so I will know if I have or haven't achieved that once I've written it.

But I am absolutely terrified at the...

Re: Loving your character too much

Agree. I don't know if you read what I wrote up-thread, but I was agreeing with you early on and I used that recent manhunt in Manitoba as an example of the extremes to which a young adult will go...

Re: Loving your character too much

Honestly, it's more complicated than that. It's true that I've become very fond of the character, yes, but I feel the reader will as well, and so I want to be mindful of both what the character would...

Re: A Note about Notes

But seriously, what are WGA rules re. rewrites? If a studio brings in a new writer to polish / do a page-one rewrite, etc., isn't there some kind of 30% rule? As in, your name automatically appears...

Re: A Note about Notes

It's a translation gig :D I translate French graphic novels for a living, and typically a translator is considered a co-author when people are crediting them the way they should. But one of my...

Re: Doing well in too many contests is a red flag for reps?

I get that it's mind-blowing, except that taste is subjective and that that's been happening since the dawn of time :) In terms of books, I mean come on, we all know about HARRY POTTER not finding a...

Re: A Note about Notes

I think people can bitch about notes all they want, but let's face it, that's the unfortunate nature of this biz (there's probably a bestseller in there somewhere, "Ridiculous Notes Given in...

I remember when I was trying to pitch a few indie scripts a few years back, it was an oddly satisfying feeling to research this site and IMDBPro looking for access to producers. I felt like a sleuth:...
