Re: What's been your biggest improvement as a screenwriter?

Learning to write only what can be seen/filmed, and writing more tersely.

Two sentences without white space max.

Writing subtext within dialogue as well. Took a while on that one ha

Re: writing a (mostly) true story?

If you do decide to slander someone, just change that person enough. Change their name, ethnicity, appearance, etc...

Then again, I'm no laywer :)

Re: Putting copyright info on title page?

Anyone worth anything will assume you've copyrighted the script.

Putting WGA or Copyright notices on the title just makes you look like an insecure amateur in my opinion.

Re: Character dilemma... any thoughts?

I don't know if I could root for a guy who is obsessed with jerking off. Relate to him, sure, but root for? Nah :)

Re: Naming unknown characters

I try and avoid ROBBER #1 or OFFICER #2. Instead of a number I use an adjective.

Re: Accidental Connections

Probably happens more than you realize, and it's your subconscious at work. You can plan it out as much as you want, but it's those little moments that are sometimes priceless.

This is why I...

Re: Underage Drinking in Film. Taboo?

Don't show cruelty to animals.
Don't show rape.
Don't show child abuse.

Everything else is all good ! haha

Seriously, you wouldn't ask if it was okay to show a massive shoot out where lots of...

Re: "BTW" lines in your script

I sometiems make slight comments like that.

In one scene I describe a church and write: Statues of saints. Long rows of empty pews, towering glass windows - ya know, a ****in church.

Maybe not the...

Re: A gentle suggestion

You probably don't even want to make them "paragraphs." one line, maybe two per shot.

Re: I don't like the courier font at all.

Courier New is used because each letter is equally sized in upper and lower case.

Other fonts have come along that do the same, but that is why.

Re: Recycling Old Scenes from Scrapped Material

There are so many lines, parts of scenes that I've cut and think are golden [for all I know they royally suck] but I think they're great. They just kinda clog up my script.

So I have a file on my...

Re: When you read pro screenplays ...

Assuming a 110 spec:

Something needs to happen by page 12.

I need to see the main characters in the first 10 pages.

Something really big needs to happen by page 30 to change the game.

Re: Coming up with great titles

for one script I came up with the title really fast, before page one.

another, I just stole the title from a TV show and a phrase me and my buddies always said "Good Times". Totally need to change...

Re: What's your rewrite process?

Once I think I've got it, I'll upload to TriggerStreet and or pay for coverage.

However, I'll usually read through my PDF and write down notes.

page 1: typo
page 2: rewrite slugline
page 3: umm...

Re: The Compelling Question

FOUR OF A KIND - Would you remain loyal and follow orders, even if it means killing your best friend?

GOOD TIMES - Do you choose lust over love?

Re: Why do people without the ability to write, write screenplays?

You can't be serious. Someone really wrote dialogue like that??

I have "text-ese" in my spec, only when someone sends a text message. Better than writing 1337 speak I guess.

Re: Why do people without the ability to write, write screenplays?

Very simple, because when you write a script, you can do this.

Character A drives.

Character A

Re: Greenlight Screenplay FULL LIST - congrats to all.

I'm moving, and I was going through boxes of crap and found the old HI8 tape that we shot our "video" on.

I remember we did it once drunk to "loosen up" and instead of being funny, we looked like...

Re: Are Novelists better Storytellers than Screenwriters?

Two totally different skills. A novelist can write 1500 pages, but they have to, because they don't have visuals to show the reader [well you could put picture sin].

Screenwriters have to be...

Re: Can my characters say commercial brands, soccer teams in their dialog

In a spec, I'm pretty sure you can get away with it as it's meant to be read, and not necessarily shot - yet.

Of course you could be craeative and ask for a pack of Red Apple cigarettes.

But yes I believe if you introduce a character, and they aren't like the main characters, you don't introduce them, until you reveal who they...

if you ever need any computer/hacker ideas just let me know. I'm a programmer for a living - ya know until someone decides to pay me to write about stuff, instead of actually doing stuff.

Yeah seriously, look at the bright side. Your ideas are being purchased. Just keep coming up with new ideas. Or at least implement them differently.

At least you're not making god-awful...
