Re: This Violates Screenplay Format -- SHOWING

"Sarah's stomach flips."

Maybe you are getting legit criticism but for the wrong reason. I don't think the issue is whether or not an actor can play this; to me, it's just a boring read.

Re: Advice on character reaction description

Is John happy? Or does he jump in the air, pump his fists, kiss a stranger, and run screaming out the door? Write something interesting.

To elide

What does everyone here think about elision and whether or not to elide?

I've read threads on this forum and others, scripts, dramatic writing books, and the like, and I've always noticed one...

Re: Father and Daughter stories?

Really surprised this hasn't been suggested yet, but:

Late Spring (Yasujiro Ozu, 1949)

It's not "dark" but I wouldn't say it's a happy film either.

Re: Star Wars Ep 8

Terrible movie made by incompetent people. Feels like a series of commercials on an amusement park ride.

Do yourself a favor and do not watch.

Re: mother!

This thread is interesting to read. So many generic franchise films and safe films in Hollywood these days. Yes, I do want to see movies that take chances. But there are good ways to do that and bad...

Re: Writing a script in 10 days?

You know when nmstevens writes something, just pay attention. The man is the best poster on this forum.

That is the voice of authority. As always.

Re: Wonder Woman

I find nearly all superhero movies insufferable and childish. Most of them offer a fundamentally dishonest take on the world. Most of the people who make them are not talented. You know, I can't...

Re: Choosing a structure

But this was my point in that first post of mine.

I don't think you should pick a structure and then write a story to fit it. You should develop a story first, and then depending on what type of...

Re: Choosing a structure

Structure isn't arbitrary. Your story dictates it. What kind of story do you want to tell?

Re: What Have You Learned

The most important thing I've learned is that you have to just write. You can study, you can watch films, you can post and read on Done Deal, you can learn about writing and storytelling any way you...

Re: Your Favorite Video Game, Story-Wise (and why)

I had this game on Xbox but never played past the first level or two. Which was sad, because it looked like a great game. Just came at the end of my prime video game days.

For me, the answer to this...

Re: Loglines In General

I think having a logline is about knowing your story and knowing what you want to write. If you can't write one or two sentences that describe your story and COMPEL a reader to demand your script,...

Re: Stephen King "On Writing" -- no plot

Nah. I'll go with what Bill Martell said at the beginning of the thread:

The plot is the entire sequence of events that happens in a story. Every story has a plot. Even bad ones.

If you outline a...

Re: Passengers

I saw this tonight and while I didn't think it was a great movie (many of its flaws have already been pointed out), I also didn't come away hating it as much as nmstevens.

2/4 stars

It would have...

Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens -contains spoilers

Every battle or nearly every battle you see for the rest of your life will probably be worse than the last battle in Star Wars. It's one of the best edited and scored sequences ever put on screen.

Re: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

That stuff was discarded and not considered good enough to be part of the original movies.

Someone else 40 years later: let's use it!

Re: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Besides that, there were eleventy different characters in the movie who say "may the force be with you" or something like it, so the effect of his scene was diminished to the extreme.

Think back to...

Re: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Even the the film itself didn't feel an emotional attachment to its own main characters. As soon as they died, the film didn't miss a beat or stop to reflect, instead rushing off to the Vader and...

Re: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

I found Rogue One to be a boring and poorly made film. It also did not offend me as much as the The Force Awakens or the prequels, so I guess it has that going for it. But wow was it poorly made and...

Re: Dirty Grandpa

The problem is that there are not enough good screenplays out there in the first place. The demand for good scripts is higher than the supply, and the difference gets filled by "whatever". Nepotism....

Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens -contains spoilers

I actually thought the little things like the chessboard, the rustiness of the Falcon, the corridor on Bespin, things like that were fantastic and I loved them. Big things like the anti-climactic...

Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens -contains spoilers

They did create a new 2-person TIE fighter, just because it was needed for one very poorly written scene, despite the fact that no other TIE fighters in the film were 2-seaters and no other TIE...

Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens -contains spoilers

Creativity begets creativity.

Even John Williams couldn't find inspiration from the paint-by-numbers story he was given.

Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens -contains spoilers

It wouldn't be surprising if she turns out to already be a fully trained Jedi who just happened to have amnesia. Then at the end of the film, she suddenly remembered her secret powers and beat the...
