Re: Short or Feature as First Script

Write a full length, and then write the short version of the full length (like an excerpted sequence).

Re: What to refer to a possessed character as

This.

Clean, simple. Doesn't take a lot for a reader to compute the change.

Re: Martin Ransohoff--old-school producer

Hey Andrew-

He's 86 and hasn't done anything since the late 90's. I'm guessing he's retired.

Re: Movie title

I think it's pretty catchy. It also makes me go "tell me more..." which is a good thing for a title.

Re: Advice Act III/Outlines

Have you finished anything ever? The ability to finish and the ability to outline / create a 3 act structure are different animals.

Re: Working within a narrative

I think there's a certain time and space in a career for something that's non-conformist. It's probably the very beginning or the very end.

You seem to want to break rules (and I'm not saying that...

Re: Portraying a mental deficiency

Explain it in the character description. Show it via dialogue once or twice quickly thereafter, and then don't show it again unless it's important to the plot.

Re: "The" in Character Names in Dialog? Why not?

Whenever possible, get rid of extraneous words and simplify. This is one of those cases. While it may work either way (as in the examples above) I'd personally pick the method that made for an...

Re: Sluglines, fictional places, and quotes.

Keep it simple.

INT. DAD'S ADS - DAY

The daddy-centric ad agency bustles with activity.

Then use the same slug line every time.

The quotes ("Dad's Ads") makes it a little harder to read than it...

Re: Lee Levinson

Same thing back in 2006. He's a nice guy, but he's selling a service. You can get better notes elsewhere.

Re: "The First Ten Pages"

Basically, if you're an up-and-comer, you have a small window in which to make an impression. LITERALLY, it can be 10 pages. If you don't have your act together in a number of ways withing 10 pages,...

Re: First 10 script pages on website?

I've been doing it for a while now. First ten pages of full length work, complete shorts. Yeah, sure, some industrious geek could find those 10 pages, but... so?

I don't expect my agents or managers...

Re: Outline for manager

Nope. No real format. In fact, I'd give him a short treatment instead (you can get a little more emotion and texture in that way...)

If it was me, I'd title each section (Act 1, etc) and write it...

Re: The whole treatment thing....

Bingo!

But, look, if you're operating as team -- agent / manager / you -- you all want to be on the same page. You want to make sure that when you hand it over, there aren't any big surprises, so...
