Re: Legalities of submitting into competition

catcon, didn't want to rain on your other thread, but I also quickly looked through their terms and was not happy about several points, so I didn't even consider it. :|

I'd say half of the...

Re: Nicholl 2020

That's cool. I really like the way the competition is run, seems fair all the way around. Did you win the fellowship or just make it as a finalist? Either way, congratulations, that's incredible.

Re: Legalities of submitting into competition

JoeBanks, cool thanks for chiming in. The very strong indemnity clauses don't worry you at all?

Re: Legalities of submitting into competition

finalact, really good that you read it all.

I did get a few private messages from people asking for my analysis of the competitions' terms.

Want to say upfront that I'm not a lawyer. I just work...

Legalities of submitting into competition

I have begun the process of submitting to various competitions for the first time ever. And I would just like to send a note of alarm that the legal text in some of them is strong enough to strip...

Re: Random film thread...

I didn't love Hail, Caesar!, but I did think it was underrated. Was a solid film. I watched AlphaGo, as mentioned here, and that was interesting. Thanks for the tip!

Re: Nicholl 2020

Good call and what my hope is. I'm sure that winning is luck of the draw. Quality + luck + politics, etc.

Did I read right that if you make it to the QF or SF you have to submit longer personal...

Re: Nicholl 2020

Do you think the percentage is so high?

I assumed having spent 2 years on my entry [AKA nowhere near a first draft] that it's already in the top 2000 or so, but I imagine the higher you get, the...

Re: Nicholl 2020

Whoa. They had a record-breaking amount of entries this year. 7831. Kissing my chances goodbye! :shifty:

VirtuaVerse - video game

Four years in development, the first video game I've ever worked on was just released. A cyberpunk, point-and-click adventure for retro gaming fans.

It was a four-person core team from inception...

Re: Nicholl 2020

Mine was confirmed at just around number 6700. I was in 8 hours before the deadline, so it was another busy year. Probably 7000 entries as was predicted.

Re: Nicholl 2020

Surprised that after a week it's still pending. They must've really gotten a lot of entries on the final day.

Re: Random film thread...

I saw How the West Was Won in Cinerama, and it was awesome! The film I remember being second fiddle to the format.

Haven't seen this one but will keep a lookout. For a single location film, I dug...

Re: Random film thread...

Out of this thread so far I've only seen the two aforementioned Spiderman films. Wasn't into Homecoming, sadly. But hardly any of the Marvel movies have done it for me. Into the Spider-Verse started...

Re: Done!

Thanks ZAZ! That's very helpful to hear you've placed in contests where you felt like you were still in a rough draft state.

Perhaps my perfectionism is getting in the way of reality. :) I don't...

Re: Random film thread...

I rewatched American Pie because I needed a breather from writing. The directing was so terrible. I had no memory of that. Surprisingly, the writing was okay at places. The biggest flaw is the main...

Re: Done!

3 drafts! Impressive. I think mine went through 8 so far.

Thanks for this tip. I have it out now with two friends who read earlier drafts and either work or have worked in the industry. I pointed...

Re: Done!

Interesting and good advice from both. Too bad you didn't make it to Nicholl this year!

Yep, it's a blistering 87 pages now (down from originally around 240 then 165 then 139, ha!).

I sent it to...

Re: Nicholl 2020

Yep, same here. I would imagine it's normal. They apparently get a massive rush on the final day(s). It looks from the outside like it may be as busy a year as ever, despite the virus situation.

As...

Re: Done!

Damn! I was genuinely curious where other writers also cap their works.

About mine, I considered it finished last year, sent it around a bit, got some notes from people and in February decided to go...

Re: Choosing a Location Where the Writer has Never been

It is doable and possible to sell those kind of projects no doubt. And congratulations if that is indeed what you did.

Easy case in point. I live in a Nordic country. The film Midsommar is pretty...

Re: Choosing a Location Where the Writer has Never been

Err ... I'm not sure that's the entire job of writing? Plenty of people write about their own immediate surroundings and life situations.

The OP is asking about a place they've never even visited?...
