Re: Not responding back after reading script

The place I eventually signed was a mess in a million ways (I left for greener pastures after a few years), but to their credit, they didn't want any significant rewrites on that script. I did maybe...

Re: Not responding back after reading script

Alternate data point: at the very beginning of my career, I was in conversation with a management company that had read a script of mine and was flirting with signing me. The hitch was, they wanted...

Re: Brandon Blake, www.filmtvlaw.com

This is just correct. Legit writers' reps do not charge money, they take percentages, even on writers without big deals ready to go. There's no "debate" to be had about that.

Re: What do you make of this query response?

Ha, well Stokes has been around for years, and everyone knows him, and he has plenty of fans. No idea why he stays with Scott! He could be repped by Babs Bitela and sell his script, assuming it was...

Re: Strike implications

My read is that these terms are a step forward but don't come close to adequately addressing the loss of income that comes from the ascendancy of streaming platforms and the retreat of linear...

Re: Writing copyrighted material

It doesn't matter if the writing is good because-- and I can't stress this enough-- NOBODY IS GOING TO READ YOUR SCRIPT IF IT'S BASED ON IP YOU DON'T CONTROL. Agents will not read it. Studios won't...

Re: Strike implications

It doesn't get them anything. "With a potential strike looming" is the prelude to people doing all kinds of crazy sh*t. It's the invocation of hysteria.

I mean, I guess they're thinking that they...

Re: Notes from Producers

There's legality and then there's common practice. Whatever the situation legally, the fact is, almost no one will touch your script if there's a muddy chain of title (which there now is, given that...

Re: Even when you have reps...

It's not "super bizarre," I've been repped at multiple agencies, I used to work at an agency, and I have friends are agents and managers-- and I assure you, none of them operate remotely like the...

Re: Even when you have reps...

I can't parse most of this, but the part I do understand is obviously incorrect. You write, "That's not how it works. Reps don't ask you to put you up for a job, it just happens." Like... no? If an...

Re: Even when you have reps...

The corollary of this is, don't get swept along on the current of whatever your reps are doing.

If left to their own devices, reps will put you up for projects you're not in love with, and some will...

Re: What's the scene like now?

Congrats! Was it announced? It was National Treasure 3, wasn't it?

Re: Abrams Artists Signs WGA CoC

Everyone is talking to the WGA except WME, although we have no idea how close to a deal anyone is (save for Gersh).

Re: What's the scene like now?

I think I know of four true story specs that sold last year (one might have been 2018?), though I don't think any of them have been announced. None sold to majors. One sold to a mini-major, but the...

Re: What's the scene like now?

Sure, if we're limiting the field to "unpackaged, non-genre spec scripts," yes, that's a tiny market, but I think that's always been a tiny market. If you want to sell a prestige drama spec and have...

Re: What's the scene like now?

The motivation is that, with a naked spec/pitch, the buyer can actually put together the elements it wants instead of some take-it-or-leave-it accumulation of hangers-on.

For real studios actually...

Re: What's the scene like now?

IMO, "the future of cinema" and "the future of screenwriting" aren't entirely symmetrical. Sooo much of the feature work these days comes from companies that are essentially vanity projects for rich...

Re: If you have a manager and attorney, do you absolutely need an agent?

Well if you've queried 100 agents, you're all done on the agent-querying front. There aren't even 100 mp lit agents active in this business.

You've basically got a choice: do something else to get...

Re: New York Is Better Than LA

That is an *insaaaaaaaaanely* good deal. $1650 p/m is market rate for a 360 sq foot studio in Los Feliz, assuming it comes with parking. A setup like you're describing could easily go for $3000+.

LA...

Re: Start an LLC?

Sorry, but, with the caveat that I too am not an accountant, I believe much of this is erroneous.

The primary benefit to having a loanout as a writer is that you can deduct business expenses--...

Re: Book option

I mean, kind of?

That movie will definitely never be made, which is one of several factors that seems to have hurt the salability of these sorts of biopics.

I honestly don't think that script...

Re: Option contract question - WGA or no??

Yes, but pretty much every company has a sig and a non-sig division. OP will almost certainly be hired by the non-sig division-- but if he has "professional writer" language put in the contract,...

Re: Selling a pilot script on spec?

Pilots generally sell for WAY above scale. For someone who's never done anything before, $75-90k seems to be pretty standard for a one-hour drama pilot.

If you've been working steadily and/or have a...

Re: Feature or TV

I mean, I agree that above all you should write what's in your heart, and I agree that you shouldn't concern yourself with 5 vs 10 set pieces in your action movie.

BUT if you're brainstorming ideas...

Re: Selling a pilot script on spec?

I don't think Mickey Fisher had ever done anything aside from some small-ball plays in the midwest prior to EXTANT. That was one of those bolt-out-of-the-blue stories that wannabe writers recite to...
