Re: Having problems

I got my first staff gig at 33 back in 2006 . I'm now in a room with 7 other writers. They are all over 34.

Re: Boutique vs bigger management co

What Ducky said. Also, can this person work with your current agent. If you get a recommendation from your agent, this might not be a problem. I don't think they'd recommend someone they can't...

Re: Strike

It's about more than "writerly" duties. It's also about keeping our health plan solvent. If we don't fix it, by 2020 it will be insolvent.

Also, writer income is down 23%. Two years ago only 2%...

Re: Introduction - Advice Appreciated

Don't give up. I started writing in my early 30s. Got my first staff job at around 34 and never looked back. Also, try your hand at TV. That's where the jobs are happening.

Re: Agents and Managers - HELP PLEEEASE!!!!

Concentrate on managers right now. I don't want to say they are easier to get, but they are usually more open to clients with potential. Agents are hard unless you blow them away or are already...

WGA TV Writer Access Project

I thought this would be interesting to share. It's a link to the WGA Writer Access Project page. In the center of the page are links by year where you can read the winning samples. The winners are...

Are producers less likely to want a series that has already been self e-published?

If you'd rather write it as a TV series, then write it as a TV series. Don't be discouraged by how hard it might be. This is a marathon, not a sprint. I was recently staffed on a show with a young...

Re: Best Agents/Managers for minority comedy writers (Asian & Indian American)?

I don't know if there is really such a thing. At least I've never heard, "Oh, that agency/manager is great with minority writers." I'm a Latino writer who's been through several programs (Disney,...

Re: Entertainment Attorney Fees

Yeah, the retainer thing seems very strange to me. My attorney takes 5% and only gets paid once the deal is done. No upfront fees.

F-Bombs Away

Have you guys noticed the use of F-Bombs in Atlanta? I remember when Breaking Bad used "****" it was always muted out. I just finished writing on a basic cable show where we were allowed to drop...

Re: Drama Structure

You can't go wrong writing a spec pilot that feels cable and is not network friendly. Networks love to read "cable" samples. If they like it enough to buy it, you'll end up redeveloping it anyway. ...

Re: 'Nother staffing Q:

At lower levels you often don't get a choice as to where you end up. You take what you can get in order to build up your resume and for the experience. My first gig as a staff writer was on a soapy...

Re: Three writers for the same job

It's not just you, this is happening to everyone, including working writers in the guild. It's pretty much a bake-off, where they pit other writers against each other and get them to do work for...

Re: When to stop

Giving it only a couple of months to sell a pilot script and put into production is an unrealistic expectation. Even with representation.

Re: Television Agencies

Lawyers usually come in once an offer is made. Getting to that offer takes a lot of work and it's the type of work lawyers typically don't do.

Re: My Black List experience.

Great post man. I work mainly in TV, but this is so true. Write and move on, write and move on. You'll get better every time and get closer to your goal every time. I wish you luck.

Re: Showrunner meeting question

Also, do not say you are "there to learn" or "want to learn." You are there to contribute. Words of wisdom from Glen Mazzara. It's a big turn off to showrunners.

Re: Where's the annual list celebrating TV specs?

A list does exist. It's been put out two years in a row (I believe it's two years). It's called The Staffing Survey. It's a list put together by coordinators and assistants who nominate their top...

Re: How much should you invest when shopping a TV Pilot

Not going to say it couldn't happen, but it would be rare. Most are writing specs, working as writer's assistants, entering contests or fellowships or doing all of the above.

Re: TV Pilot Specs vs. Feature Specs

Try not to to think of it like that. If you're writing pilots, and you are good, you'll probably get a chance to staff before you actually sell something. If you're thinking television, think about...
