Re: Querying studios

Gucci and Joe, you both mention attachments - no one's getting attachments without an agent or manager, and if you have an agent or manager, you don't need to be querying studios...

Re: Querying studios

I don't think any query is wasted if you're trying to break in. Sure, prioritize, but why not take a shot everywhere? If some studio exec loves your script, they can easily help you get a manager...

Re: Franklin Leonard

I got repped off a query, but it was a million years ago.

But here's a post from early in the BL's existence:

Re: What would you do here?

The whole thing is kind of odd.

NDA's are what writers sign when they're working with a studio on a high profile project. I had to sign them when I worked with Illumination on future projects.

It...

Re: How do such bad shows get on TV?

That's not how packaging works, remotely. There's a lot of misinformation floating around from both sides, but briefly:

I've cast multiple pilots, and have never once had my choices limited to...

Re: How do such bad shows get on TV?

I'm with you - the adjustment on Parks and Rec between seasons 1 and 2 was amazing... and to see that the best ratings were for season 1 just makes me shake my head.

Re: How do such bad shows get on TV?

This is going to sound shocking, but different people have different tastes?

I love Parks and Rec. It's highest average ratings for a season was its first, when it got 6 million. After that, the...

Re: Story Into Screenplay

If you really want to be a screenwriter, start by adapting your own short story.

Re: After read request, how long does it take?

Somewhere between a weekend and never. One or two polite "just checking in to see if you've had a chance to read" emails are fine. After that, move on.

Re: "Great Concept" Now What?

It seems like you're spending a lot of money on learning how to write, when you really should be saving your money and just writing. No set of notes will turn you into a great writer or make your...

Re: Advice on character reaction description

That's bad advice. You don't have to "cross over into the director's role," but if you choose to and it makes the read better, there is absolutely nothing wrong with doing so.

Read a bunch of black...

Re: Advice on character reaction description

Clarity is the key. Brevity is close behind. A lot of suggestions you've received are either unclear or overwritten, IMO.

There's nothing wrong with saying a character is shocked, if that's what...

Re: Etiquette question: Meeting with a manager

It's a tough one. Bird in the hand... the others haven't gotten back yet...

Is there a big difference in the status of the people who are meeting with you/reading you?

I think at the very least...

Re: Pitching as a Lottery

****, does that make me sad on about a dozen levels.

You should not be paying someone 300 bucks to read your script or 3k to submit it to 3 companies. Full stop.

Re: How important is voice in screenwriting?

Sometimes a script will have a great premise or plot turns or set pieces or whatever - something that makes a studio think there's a film there - but the execution isn't great. Those scripts can be...

Re: Reputable agents/managers charging a fee to read

If he really wanted to whittle down potential clients, he'd just move to a referrals only system. This feels like a guy trying to keep the lights on.

Re: Reputable agents/managers charging a fee to read

It probably goes without saying, but if a management company needs to chase reading fees to supplement its income, it's not successful. (Let alone - if a manager has *time* to provide coverage, he's...
