Re: Inspiration

I don't watch much scripted television anymore, but some from days gone by that stick in my memory.

Twin Peaks...when it came out there was nothing else like it on television. Word of mouth was so...

Re: Protags: Likable? Relatable? Empathetic? Or is intriguing enough?

...one more... in Rom-Com My Best Friend's Wedding. Julia Roberts is likable, but her character does so many terrible things almost up to the very end of the film. She does do a little arc and...

Re: Protags: Likable? Relatable? Empathetic? Or is intriguing enough?

I'm looking through some of my IMDb rated films (2000+ and counting) and I'm kinda seeing two categories that are relevant.

Film Noir in general where nobody is innocent, somebody usually ends up...

Re: Protags: Likable? Relatable? Empathetic? Or is intriguing enough?

My two cents... there needs to be some reason to keep reading or keep watching. Likable protag is one way, but sometimes you want to see how something ends up or watch a train wreck unfold. ...

Dream Writing Assignments

Bill and Ted Face the Music (2020)
got me thinking...what movie--at least 15 years old--
would you love to be assigned to re-boot, re-start, do a belated sequel, etc??

I'd like a crack at Ferris...

Re: Sci-Fi clichés

I haven't talked with Elon since college, but even though he is slowly losing his accent, he still fits the cliche stereotype of rich, evil megalomaniac with supermodel wife.

From the...

Re: Sci-Fi clichés

Getting back on topic, I detest the super-obvious, melodramatic rescue part.

Going back in our SciFi Cliché time machine to Dante's Peak...I'm liking the Pierce Brosnan/Linda Hamilton dynamic...

Re: Sci-Fi clichés

I'm not a big fan of films set hundreds of years into the future with elaborate new scenarios. It takes so long to describe the set-up that the story can get lost.

SciFi only really needs one...

Re: The Last 10 Days

Mostly just thinking.

I have a client in mind for a 25-30 minute film...the client is of course unaware that he will be a client...but I think if I can make the concept work he'll eventually...

Re: Random film thread...

I retrieved 3 from the DVR in the last few days.

The best of the three was Bound (1996) by the Wachowskis. I'd call it a noir with no innocent characters. It's also a good example of a "contained"...

Re: Random film thread...

Such an incredible pool of talent involved with Gosford Park but it just didn't come together in an interesting manner for me.

Neither the class differences nor the murder nor both combined...

Re: Random film thread...

Some random films I recently viewed and rated on IMDb...they've ranged as high as 7/10 down to
Gosford Park (2001) 2/10 and
The North Star (1943) 3/10

Some better viewing:

Noir:
Elevator to the...

Re: What is the best place for a petty criminal with limited cash to run to?

An American Indian Reservation might be suitable. State and local jurisdiction is very limited and the Federal jurisdiction is only sporadically enforced. Nobody talks to the law in those areas.

Re: Which screenplays do you recommend reading?

In the Romantic Comedy sector, My Best Friend's Wedding was on the tube last night.

It has some of the classic features of RomCom (the misunderstanding, the chase), but turns some on their heads...

Re: Films that handle theme well and those that do it poorly

Which Indiana Jones movies do you like?

Probably the two with clear theme. (#1 & #3). Indy finds God and Indy reconciles with his father. Numbers 2 and 4 don't get re-broadcast and re-watched...

Any script problems becoming less...
