This sub reddit is pretty awesome for research

Wow. This sub blew me away. Lots of peer reviewed papers on mental conditions and occupations. It was recently featured on Scriptnotes.

Producers, would you hire a writer who doesn't live in LA?

Say you find a great writer. You really like a spec he wrote and have something else in mind that he would be great for. But he lives in Montana, or Nevada, Georgia. Or wherever.

I ask because this...

Re: Where should I spend my money?

The Black List isn't for coverage. I mean, they arent' there to give you detailed notes.

Re: Help with character

The mentally ill might find it insulting. But as others have noted, it's been done.

Someone in that state is delusional. If they aren't a danger to themselves or others, they wouldn't be...

Re: Passive Voice in Description?

Thanks! Very helpful.

The character in question isn't the main character, but he gets the plot going.

The item in question is something he built that he will use in subsequent scenes.

Re: Second guessing

Put it away for a few weeks and then read it (in one sitting if possible) without editing it.

Passive Voice in Description?

Hey all, awesome forum!

Let's say the character has converted a TV into an aquarium (or w/e) as seen in Grumpy Old Men.

Would you say in the script that HE converted it, or would you say "has...

Re: Black List founder Franklin Leonard answers your questions about the Black List

Quite right. I was out of place. My apologies to the author.

Re: Black List founder Franklin Leonard answers your questions about the Black List

Thing is, that's not enough. Look at it from our POV..despite your assurances, we have NO idea who's reading our script. How do you protect us from the bitter failed writer who will poo on anything...

About Amazon Studios...

Does anyone know if I can submit under a pen name? I have a trunk script I might send them, but I don't want any negative stigma in case they option it.

The stuff in their dev slate is really...

Re: Vomit Drafts/Muscle Drafts/Draft Zero

Awesome thread.

I create an outline but veer from it when I'm writing as long as it isn't a major change in direction. I have a writing partner though, and that helps keep me on track.

Re: Finding an agent to submit to Amazon Studios Inc (WGA signatory) tho I'm not WGA?

It's a failed experiment. Just take a look at the junk in their "development slate." It's all garbage made up of contrived plots and bland dialog. Format? forget about it. And these scripts are the...

Re: How much scene description in first pages?

You don't create world by writing bricks of text, you create it by writing vividly with the amount of words you can use. Learning to use words economically and effectively is a lot of work. :bounce:

Re: How to Emphasize a Word?

It should be clear from the writing and context. The problem is that multiple emphasis lines are a sign of a weak writer.

Certainly if you're trying to break in you have to follow the rules. If you...

Re: "For the love of _________"

Why are you insisting on the pause? You'd better have a good reason because readers hate scripts like that. They hate it because producers hate it because actors hate it.

Re: How to Emphasize a Word?

Evan, there's no need for emphasis in any of those examples. You have to let the director direct and the actors.

Neither want to be told by you how to interpret the script.

Like someone who posted...

Re: How to Emphasize a Word?

As others have said, underline or italics. I think I've seen the underline suggested more often. For good reason, imo.

Whichever you choose, avoid using emphasis a lot. It should come from your...

I'm not trying to be a smart as! or anything, but that's wayyy too many characters to be introduced in one scene, and probably too many characters for your entire script.
