Re: A Question About Action

Look at the script for WALL-E. They do short sentences, each on its own line, and it helps keep the action moving during no-dialogue scenes. ALIEN is formatted similarly. You might also look at the...

Re: NBC Writers on the Verge emails went out

Interesting...I think most of the others ask for a second sample (either spec or original), which makes sense IMO. If you're investing in a writer with the hope of a long-haul return, you want to...

Re: Sam Shepard passed away

This one is so sad for me. He was the first playwright that really made me go "THIS. THIS is what I want to do someday." For the first couple of years after I first read him in high school (and then...

Re: Drug research

Wow, thanks for the suggestions! I haven't revisited this thread in a bit and missed the new posts. Lots of great options to consider. Optimus, I really appreciate the specifics you came up with.

Re: Drug research

These are awesome resources, thanks!

The one time I took Ambien all it did was give me a massive headache, but I've known other people who had minor hallucinations - bricks on a wall seeming to melt...

Re: Drug research

Good call on Reddit. I know they have some pretty active drug communities.

The disease idea is an interesting one - maybe narcolepsy would fit. Hmmm.

You guys are always so good at coming up with...

Re: Drug research

I've heard of DMT, but didn't know the details. I'll read up on it, thanks!

Re: Drug research

Oh, that's a fun twist. Like he's high all the time, and once he stops, his psychic vision clears. I'll have to think about that.

Drug research

Alright, I'm rewriting my ghost pilot, and thinking of including one character who can only see and interact with the ghost character while he's under the influence.

Short version: I want something...

Re: Writing a script in 10 days?

If you have to do the entire story development and rewrite process within 10 days, then that's a killer. But a draft in 10 days is pretty doable, especially if you're writing full-time.

Re: Too much drama?

One thing that helps is to ask yourself, "What needs to happen in this scene?" What does the audience need to find out? What do the characters need to learn and/or accomplish? What has to happen in...

Re: Wonder Woman

I actually wonder this with Superman. If he's supernaturally strong, where is he finding enough resistance to build up all those extra muscles?

Re: Sci-Fi market saturated?

I mean, if you believe some people there are only two real stories:

A) A stranger comes to town
B) The hero goes on a journey

That's it. Either someone comes in or someone leaves.

I do think that...

Re: The "New" Mummy

I think they have to decide if they want to go scary or campy (or maybe some of each). Bride of Frankenstein could be tons of fun if they go for a self-aware spoofy vibe, or just campy and fun. But...

Re: The "New" Mummy

I really like Sofia Boutella, so I was thinking of seeing it just to see her Mummy. Maybe I'll wait until it's out of the theaters and catch it on a smaller screen.

Was it fun, at least?

Re: Does this mean anything?

Depending on the email app/program they use, there could be all sorts of reasons they're viewing an email multiple times. It could have an unclear subject line (or the program could be pushing the...

Re: Wonder Woman

Writing-wise (and acting-wise, really), I think the most impressive thing was how they balanced Diana's strength and confidence with her naivete and innocence. That's a tough needle to thread and...

Re: Seeking Character Arc advice

I don't know that I think about character arcs in specific terms. It's more like, the whole story hinges on a character who wants/needs something (complex characters usually want one thing, and...

Re: Choosing a structure

Right, but every story idea starts somewhere. What's the difference between saying "I want to tell a story about drug dealers" and "I want to write something that includes a lot of flashbacks" if you...

Re: Multi-protagonist structure

It helps to lay things out visually so you can track it all. I've heard for shows like Arrested Development they wind up basically making conspiracy theory looking things - all the characters and...

But sometimes, the structure will help dictate the story. Especially when you're looking at something wildly off the beaten path. Like if you decide at the outset that you want to tell the story out...

OK OK, I will actually ramble on this subject. Here is my ramble.

I've intentionally chosen a structure to play around in before, but that was mostly back in my playwriting days. They let you get...

Re: Silicon Valley

I genuinely don't understand how they stay this fresh and funny this far along. It's just genius.

And I agree, the characters are really well-differentiated, which is kind of amazing when you...
