Re: Typical rep problem

I agree.

You'd probably be better off with a manager here in LA who has connections and can work for you with your agent (they would probably have suggestions of people they enjoy working with)....

Re: To do or not to do

This and what ProfessorChomp said (I've been here 10 years and have yet to learn how to do multiple quotes...)

This person wants to remain the contact point/middle man or else they could easily be...

Re: LLC vs INC? When?

I would speak to an accountant. I always heard if you made $200-250k and above. Most are LLC. But also I would check the terms of those deals because almost writing jobs pay in steps and not all at...

Re: Can I get an agent with only spec pilot or must have spec of existing?

If you want to be a TV writer, reps will likely look beyond the material before they sign you. Let's not pretend writing a good script is easy and even getting it read from cover to cover is easy....

Re: Can I get an agent with only spec pilot or must have spec of existing?

Reps are more likely to read multiple scripts because they are signing you as a writer and want to know you can consistently put out strong material.

Once you're submitted to a studio, network, or...

Re: Writer signed with manager at 19...

I signed with my first manager at 21 and agent at 22.

19 is definitely the youngest I've heard of though.

Age is mostly irrelevant when it comes to what's on the page. As far as trying to navigate...

Re: Boutique vs bigger management co

Don't worry about the overhead banner for management companies. Have your agent set you up with whoever he/she thinks is a good fit for your writing and personality.

Meet a lot of people and feel...

Re: What would you do?

Is there a reasonable amount of option money on the table?

I would wait unless there's $ that you need.

Re: Agents and Managers - HELP PLEEEASE!!!!

That's in order to try to get a rep -- it doesn't mean it will land you a career.

A great screenplay doesn't always equal a great movie or even a good one - that's why there are great screenplays...

Re: Can you break in with just one script?

You can get started (your foot in the door) with one script. But you'll need the next one, and the next to keep working.

Re: Agents and Managers - HELP PLEEEASE!!!!

The only trick is to write good material.

There are tons of people in LA who probably know someone who knows an agent so it's not about who you know. Agents want to represent someone whose material...

Re: Pilot response time with Networks?

It could depend on how far up the chain it's submitted, but generally studios have a team of development execs (as well as current execs) and most development projects circulate among them, but yes,...

Re: Pilot response time with Networks?

True. I assumed when the OP said "networks" they meant broadcast since usually that's what people mean when they say network. Normally when people are referring to the cable networks they will say...

Re: Pilot response time with Networks?

Maybe they try to buy up a couple more projects if they aren't happy, but I'm not sure it's a common thing. Each studio buys upwards of 50 pitches and projects so I imagine they don't have too much...

Re: Pilot response time with Networks?

Typically buying and development season doesn't start until summer. Right now they should be looking at projects they bought last year to see which ones they want to shoot as pilots, I doubt they are...

Re: When do you say, "I GIVE?"

I've optioned a small budget feature a couple times in the past and while it's a step, it's a long ways from getting a film made. I just want to keep you realistic. A lot of time it's pocket change...

Re: Ghost Writing

I've seen busy upper level writers have writing help (usually an assistant) but they've hired them soon after on staff or helped them get other opportunities.

Was there a writing staff? They didn't offer you a spot on the staff when it got picked up?

Re: Advice on queries

I was read by 3-6 every time but ultimately found my managers through referral. That was a couple years ago and I don't know if reps still request at the same rate due to television seasons taking up...

When I used to send queries I would just put the title of the project in the subject line.

Once you are a full member you report your earnings every quarter and then pay dues on whatever you made that quarter.

Definitely don't.

Re: Best Agencies for Comedy?

Try to find a good agent who represents multiple comedy writers instead of focusing on the agency.

I work in dramas so I'm not too familiar with who that would be. Most agents have comedy and drama...

Re: Advice needed on TV pilot

There's a 99.5% chance no one will ever see episode 2.

For TV (as a sample or to sell), put all your eggs in one basket and if someone buys it and develops it, then you can rewrite to fit their...

Re: Anyone switch from large management co to small?

IMDB Pro isn't always updated or current so do keep that in mind.

Is this manager a literary manager since they seem to have so much "talent" on their roster? I know of a manager or two that has...
