Re: A Christmas contest, perhaps.

If the deadline is Jan 1, then I think the Xmas/holiday spirit will still be in the ether, and writers will have a bit more time to write, while getting all family/personal holiday stuff done. The...

Re: A Christmas contest, perhaps.

Why a deadline before Xmas, 16 days? What's the harm of letting it run until Dec 31? Keep the prompt/theme broad, maybe just "Holidays." Specific plots are a turnoff.

Re: October 2019 Contest + results

FWIW, I sat this one out because the prompt (finding a body while burying a body) was too specific for my taste - felt like using someone else's idea.

Re: The next writing exercise

I'm not crazy about the narrow story prompt, but I'm in.

Re: Jojo Rabbit

You know, after watching the trailer again, and then reading an interview with the director, I agree. There's a lot more soul in this movie.

Re: The Hunt (Cancelled!)

The assertion that something is "complicated" is subjective based on intellect and experience. I assert that building a circuit board is complicated, but experienced engineers and electricians are...

Re: The Hunt (Cancelled!)

So you're of the belief that the standard for success for all criminal and civil statutes is 100% effectiveness? Anything less than 100% effectiveness is evidence that there would be no difference...

Re: The Hunt (Cancelled!)

I understand, but you and others don't seem to understand the difference between "well-regulated" and prohibition. No viable political entity in the US is calling for an outright ban on firearms...

Re: The Hunt (Cancelled!)

You do realize that "banning all guns" is a fear-mongering tactic used by the NRA lobby to keep them relevant and to distract from commonsense gun safety regulations that a vast majority of Americans...

Blinded by the Light

Wonderful and masterful! Kudos to Director Gurinder Chadha and screenwriter Sarfraz Manzoor. If you've ever felt trapped by life's circumstances, you'll get this.

Trailer:...

Re: The Hunt (Cancelled!)

Perhaps, just perhaps, the business end of Hollywood felt a twinge of humanity, to the extent that they understood that releasing a film about humans gunning down humans for sport was not in good...

Re: What is a hook and do I need one?

For me, a hook is a relatable irony that you can build a story around.

No hook: An Iraq war veteran competes in a dance contest.
Hook: An Iraq war veteran who lost both legs to an IED competes...

Mr. Nobody

Watched this last night. Blew me away - story, acting, cinematography, sound, etc. Why this wasn't a sensation here, is a complete mystery.

Re: Log The Line... LOGLINES

I honestly didn't see yours, Joe. I didn't have time or the energy to wade through some of the longer posts.

BTW, I wrote the last of those three loglines.;)

Re: Log The Line... LOGLINES

A writerly person can distinguish between a poorly written, unimaginative logline, and a good one that'll grab the reader and force him to lean in to his phone screen. Same goes for the first...

Re: To elide

I wouldn't overlook the value of the "quieter" vignettes in a movie. Like all other elements of the story, they should serve to further the narrative, albeit in a subtle way. One of my favorites...

Re: Dial-A-Ride

My pleasure. It's good to know that simple stories can become powerful messages of inspiration in the hands of skillful, creative people.
