Re: New York Is Better Than LA
Netflix is building a huge studio right now. My Netflix show shoots in NY, as do others. There's a 30% rebate on the under the line budget... It's not impossible to shoot here, luckily. This will...

Re: Pilot Development
I'm finding people with pilots, just like everyone else. I just used to like the spec world better. I'm adapting. ;) The trouble is sometimes you hire someone who wrote a great pilot about their...

Re: Pilot Development
No, I used to love specs of other shows. But they're just not realistic with how fragmented the tv landscape has become. If it were a spec of a show I loved, I would be excited to read it - but...

I may be repeating some of what other people said, but:
Specs are dead dead dead as samples. The reason is, there are just too many shows. Everyone used to be familiar with Friends or Seinfeld... ...

Re: Franklin Leonard
That's a good payday for a non-union gig. Nice. If you don't mind sharing, I'm curious - how will it pay out? Some amount up front, rest when it films, or the whole amount to write the script?

The five winners get the lion's share of the press and attention, but of course, getting close gets you some reads.
Let's say 70 people get success! That still means that 99% of the people who...

Re: Franklin Leonard
Docgonzo makes a good point, but every source of amateur screenplays yields a pass more often than an offer of representation. There's no system that's going to find more than handful of great...

Re: Franklin Leonard
You are demanding objectivity about a subjective act, the judging of art. It will never happen. And if someone tells you that they've figured out a way to do it, they are lying to you to get your...

I went back and read about the experiment I ran - Franklin said that scores from paid reviews that diverged by more than 2 points only accounted for 4% of submissions. That's actually pretty...

Networks are the only one with schedules anymore. For a spec pilot, they're already buying them, and the last realistic shot at selling is probably early January.
So I'd say now is the best time,...

I think you're overthinking it. If you've got a project you're passionate about with another writer, write it. If whoever's rep likes it, they'll take it out. If it sells, maybe you decide to team...

I've co-written one off scripts with friends at different agencies. The agents figured out how to go out with it. It wasn't impossible. Or really hard. They just split up the town.

I don't think good managers care as much about concept. They're not looking for one sale, they're looking for a writer with a great voice that can work for a long time.
My first successful feature...

You've got to put them to bed and move on. You never...

Re: Doing well in too many contests is a red flag for reps?

I'm a big believer in "put as...

Re: Doing well in too many contests is a red flag for reps?
If you afford it, enter the big contests. Try the Black List. And also send query letters. And also network. Get a job in the business if you can. Pretty much the only guaranteed waste of time...
