Re: Managers -- What Is and Is Not An Ideal Relationship

I've got a friend who was one of the winners of the ScreenCraft fellowship and I was pretty shocked how much they did for him. It seemed like he went on a full water bottle tour of managers...

Re: Managers -- What Is and Is Not An Ideal Relationship

What would you like them to do that they do not do?

Get me more meetings. And not just generals, but put me up for more actual OWAs.

how often do you communicate with your manager?

Totally depends...

Gotcha. Very good to know.

Thanks for the explanations, all!

Re: Residuals???

I've definitely heard similar things. Then I've also heard from writers who get a decent check in the mail every now and then (like a few in this thread). I feel like if I gathered everything I've...

Re: Residuals???

Thanks for the responses, guys. I did have contingent compensation specifics in the contract. Percentage of the net profit. But I suppose that's different from residuals, which is tied more directly...

Re: A New Podcast?

Thanks Steve! The offer is much appreciated. I'll let my friends know it's there and will definitely reach out if they're interested.

Re: Residuals???

Does anyone know how residuals work on a non-WGA project? I had a film released last year that was financed by a legitimate indie company but that didn't get me into the guild (that's a whole other...

Re: A New Podcast?

A few friends of mine have this very concept in the works. I want to say they're planning on recording the first episode next week or the week after? We're exactly at the level you guys are talking...

Re: What is a hook and do I need one?

Great point. I can't count the number of times I've pitched an idea that I'm excited about to my reps, to which they respond in some variation of "We know you could write the **** out of this, but...

Re: What is a hook and do I need one?

Ha I've somehow never thought of doing this as an exercise. Love it.

Re: What is a hook and do I need one?

I agree with the last few posts. I always think of the hook as how the creative exec is going to pitch the script to get their boss to read it. The really quick, five second "you've got to read this...

Re: Franklin Leonard

I don't want to speak for docgonzo but in reading your previous post, I assumed you were talking about blind email queries. I have no stats to back this up whatsoever, just my own personal experience...

Re: Avengers End Game

Seriously. The Hollywood Arclight was showing like 4 or 5 movies total this weekend. I've never seen such a thing. I tried to go see Under The Silver Lake at the Los Feliz 3 and it was sold out 15...

Re: Not in the WGA – Do I still fire my agent?

I'm in the same boat and have been wondering what the expected protocol for us would be. Good to know.

Re: Pet Semetary

I saw it last night and unfortunately left disappointed. It works well enough as a horror movie -- and I actually liked the BIG CHANGE in the second half, I thought that made for a more interesting...

Re: Pet Semetary

Ha! Chalk it up to vastly different reactions to King as a kid. My first of his was The Shining when I was in fifth grade and over the following, oh, seven or eight years, I pretty much devoured...

Re: Pet Semetary

I'm excited for this one! Was morbidly fascinated by the original as a kid and the book remains one of my favorites. Definitely going to try to see it this weekend.

Re: Us

I enjoyed it, for the most part. I do want to see it again, as this was the most excited I'd been for a movie in probably 8 or 9 years, so I feel like I do need another viewing free of the baggage of...

Re: Amateur move?

I went on a general (this was years ago) with an exec I'd previously met with once before and had a great rapport with. It was again a super friendly meeting that I thought went extremely well but...

Welcome Home - My First Produced Movie!

This may constitute shameless self-promotion... but DDP has been a part of my life ever since I started this screenwriting journey nearly ten years ago. Even though I've only been a sometimes-poster,...

Re: The waiting is the hardest part...

Like you said, I'm sure each case is its own beast... but I don't think it should take that long for one actor. I'm assuming this is the actor reading simply to decide whether to attach himself,...

Re: To Live In LA

Ain't that the truth. I just had to move last month after being in the same apartment for three and a half years and was stunned by what had happened to the market just in that short time span. I'm a...

Re: When your script doesn’t go out wide

I've had three specs hit the town -- two went wide and the third was a bit more targeted. It still wound up going to a decent number of producers but it was a much more gradual process. I'd say the...

Re: BlacKKKlansman

1000%

The "review" is simply a personal attack on Spike Lee. The irony, of course, is that the "reviewer" spends half the article espousing his belief that Spike Lee is the racist one. Also, compare...
