Re: Hispanic, Latino, Latina?

Yeah, no-one in Europe uses the term Hispanic, it's very much an americanism

Re: Ron Howard's Drought

You're using the wrong stats to justify your position- John Carter may have lost a lot of money but it actually performed pretty well at the box office - almost $300m worldwide; The Lone Ranger was...

Re: Ron Howard's Drought

But nothing's a sure thing.

I honestly think that In the Heart of the Sea didn't do well as it's not that good a film and it was up against a lot of similar competition - such as the Martian which...

Re: The Big Short

If you read onto the next paragraph in that article it mentions how JP Morgan still took big losses in the housing market along with other items.

Goldman's were in at the beginning issuing CDS's,...

Re: #OscarsSoWhite

This is it. Any character in Pulp Fiction for example could have been any race as far as I remember. So, maybe the answer is to name ethnicity as non-white for characters but not necessarily let it...

Re: #OscarsSoWhite

But the character would only need to be played by a black, Hispanic person etc if race is part of the story. Shouldn't the point be that in stories where race isn't a factor the character could be...

Re: The Big Short

But for the intervention of Governments across the globe the whole system would have come down. JP Morgan and Goldman's might want people to think they're smarter than everyone else, but they...

Re: The Big Short

The humor is based around the little guy sticking it to the big banks which was funny. Okay the 'little guys' here are all multimillionaires but the film is skilled in making you root for them as...

Re: The Big Short

Agreed the Margaret Robbie and Selena Gomez cameo's weren't the best, really liked the chef.

Also, would have liked a bit more of Carrell's team, the three of them worked really well together with...

The Big Short

Couldn't see a thread for this...

I really liked it, best film I've seen in a while. Very funny film but also got me emotionally as you root for the characters and get mad at the establishment. ...

Re: Guilty pleasures - Movies you know suck, but can't get enough of!

I always wondered how on earth Runaway Train got in there, a truly great film in amongst a lot of, well a lot of films that I loved in my youth when I would have hated Runaway Train.

Still love the...

Re: Ron Howard's Drought

I assume Transformers makes money because a lot of people like them. They may be bad films to you and me but not to a lot of people. Likewise Fast and Furious. I really don't think it's to do with...

Re: Ron Howard's Drought

Waterworld turned a profit and is really nothing like In the Heart of the Sea. And neither are John Carter or Lone Ranger, completely different beasts and failed because they were bad films not...

Re: Guilty pleasures - Movies you know suck, but can't get enough of!

The first 3 mentioned here I don't think are bad.

Starship Troopers as mentioned is satire and hits the mark that it was trying to excellently.

Waterworld may not be great, but its not a bad film...

Re: What Major Box Office Bomb

Along the same lines, The Princess Bride is oft quoted as also having failed at theatres and only found the love when released on video.

Re: Inside Out

I thought it had some really good moments, but felt a little too adult for little kids and too childish for adults overall. Still that is comparing it to other Pixar films which is a high standard -...

Re: What Major Box Office Bomb

I thought that Cutthroat Island was pretty decent. Just didn't resonate for whatever reason.

Maybe the reason was that it was bad and it's just me though.
