Malice and Mistletoe - Graphic novel side project

Hey guys,

I've still got a couple solid screenwriting projects in the works, but I teamed up with the awesome comics artist Jack Purcell (Batman, Gotham Underground, Green Arrow) this year to work...

Re: Bizarre resubmission situation with Circle of Confusion

Don't resubmit.

It's a pass. If (they felt) it was amazing, the bizarre communication issues wouldn't have resulted in a form letter. At the very least, someone else would've tried to get in touch...

Re: Have 2 meetings and need advice!

Ha! I saw this short a few days ago and have already shown it to a number of people. Well done and best of luck.

Re: Script Buying Sites

Honestly, it makes me angry as hell that sites charge money for scripts when they don't own the rights. That couldn't be a much more blatant violation of copyright. Absolutely insane. If I had the...

Re: Ending action paragraphs with a comma or conjunction?

I haven't seen it before, but that doesn't mean it's wrong.

If it reads well and accomplishes what you're going for, go ahead and do it. The same idea applies to pretty much every formatting...

Re: no written contract with manager

Not having a contract is a good thing. If your manager goes cold on you (or just sucks), it gives you the opportunity to get out. Lots of managers work without one, including mine.

By the way --...

Re: Research interviews

Well, there you go. Experience wins out, so listen to sbbn. And definitely be conscientious.

That said, I've contacted specific people before (admittedly, not law enforcement), and it's usually...

Re: Research interviews

You might have an easier time if you reach out to a specific officer or detective. How do you find out the names of these people? Look up news articles about recent homicides in Boston, take note...

Re: Temporal order of a screenplay...

It's not just about throwing bigger rocks at your protagonist, it's about having them grow organically out of the story, with one thing naturally leading to another. Every action your protagonist...

Re: Temporal order of a screenplay...

To me, it sounds like this has less to do with the order of your scenes and more to do with escalation. Conflict should be getting bigger and bigger throughout the script. Each scene should serve...

Re: Capitalizing Verbs for Effect?

Love the SIXTH SENSE example, Joe. Well done.

Capping is a personal preference. I personally use caps a fair bit, as I write a lot of action and it's useful. If you don't like it, don't do it,...

Re: Capitalizing Verbs for Effect?

Jeff's answer was the best one.

As long as the writing is great, no one will care. Find a style that suits with you and go with it.

Re: Capitalizing Verbs for Effect?

edit: I just found out that DDP's censorship won't let me capitalize everything in my post. Crazy!

Re: Word count

I would really like to see this. I also think it would be useful (perhaps even moreso) to do the same thing with specs that have had some success in jumpstarting careers, since that's what most of...

Re: Word count

The average is definitely coming out there. As a math geek, I think that's cool. However, in the interest if encouraging people to write as well as possible, I think it's really important to...

Re: Word count

Word count does not matter at all. The range is enormous, even among super successful scripts by extremely talented writers. White space is great, but top notch writing is never going to feel...

Are you suggesting this is a joke? I mean, it could be, but I've seen a few people on the internet touting that word count matters (it doesn't).

Here's...

Re: word count

I am also curious to know why someone is asking you about this. Word count varies so much from writer to writer, based on their personal style. Page count is a far more accurate tool for figuring...

At home pitching - Benderspink, Caliber, Panay, 1211, Ineffable - Interesting concept

This is very exciting for ChiliP and I certainly hope the best for (him?).

However, I still want to caution people about getting excited over this type of thing. 104 read requests from 200 pitches...

Re: "The" in Character Names in Dialog? Why not?

It's really not that big of a deal, either way. Cutting "THE" gives you less to type, though.

They're a really good company, but it's tough to get read there unless The Script Mechanic gives you a Consider or you get a referral from someone. But you never know, the right logline might crack...
