Re: Need Some Advice...

I get it. That's a good question. I never got as far as you havw so I don't know. I wonder -- do all the managers solely take projects to the production side of their shingle ?

Re: Need Some Advice...

Fa4...
I'm not clear on what you mean by free rewrites as it relates to working with a manager.

In my limited experience, at that stage you're tweaking the script prior to the manager shopping the...

Re: Getting rid of commas in dialogue

Your progress report find reminds me of one of my own. My mom had a suitcase full of photos and papers she'd saved and I found a 5th grade report card with the teacher's comment: sc111 expresses her...

Re: Getting rid of commas in dialogue

Glad you returned to your wriring. Also glad your story of encouraging another writer has a happier ending than mine.

I do my best to encourage other writers. As one guy I know characterized it:...

Re: Getting rid of commas in dialogue

I have a hunch yeoman-esque pubic school teachers have destroyed countless potentially-awesome fledgling writers.

In fact, in one case, it's more than a hunch. Years ago, as a favor to a friend in...

Re: Getting rid of commas in dialogue

I wouldn't worry about commas in dialogue. Write the line the way you want it to be delivered by the actor.

Yes sir.

Yes, sir.

Yes! Sir!

Yes ... sir.

Re: Done Deal Pro Site

I have my suspicions. Will the contest winner be allowed to know who will be reading "his" completed script? Or will you have some sort of MysteryReader thing going on?

Look -- if you can get one...

And who will provide said screenplay feedback?

Re: Done Deal Pro Site

I think Will was amazingly tolerant of your "suggestions" for his website while setting strong boundaries.

As for your question: What's the worst that can happen?

Two words: Bad Feedback.

Bad...

I agree with Will's points on a logline contest:

Re: How Tone and Voice = Writer's Style (attitude and personality)

I agree. And I'll go further -- for an unknown, unsold writer it's even more important to make anyone in the industry reading your pages "feel" something. Feel a genuine emotion.

Many moons ago,...

Re: Scene with no dialogue

You can cut this back with a few edits. Starting each sentence with "She" and repeating "box" is redundant. You can enter the scene later by starting in the study with Ashlynn already in the process...

Re: Suggestion: Value of Reading "Script Pages Feedback Advanced"

Joe, on this:

I did not suggest limiting one's education to the Advanced Script Pages forum. Of course, it serves all of us to expand our education in the craft of screenwriting as much as...

Just want to suggest the value of reading the Script Pages Feedback Advanced section here:

Even though the pro writers who once...

Re: Why Did They Pass on Your Screenplay...

As FA4 summarized, any one or more of items 1 thru 5 result in a pass.

I look at it this way -- the only item the writer has any control over is #1: the quality of writing. So I focus on this alone...

Re: Log The Line... LOGLINES

I agreed with your post about The Godfather. I had little to add. Maybe we need a "like" button.

The comment after that about a protag with super powers. Hmmm.

Can a log help a writer map out act...

Re: Log The Line... LOGLINES

I'm leaning the way I posted in an earlier comment: pasting page 1 of my script into the email. (Though the Starbucks line needs a bit of a tweak.)

What Craig Mazin said in that podcast resonated...

Re: Log The Line... LOGLINES

Maybe. Or maybe their take is one to be considered. Maybe the idea that a writer should not follow "logline rules" in a cold query is an idea with legs.

Maybe.

Joe: You're still missing Mazin's point (boldface mine):

Which is prefaced by John August saying:

Hmmmm. Two professional feature screenwriters are dismissive of loglines. Not just 25-word...

Re: Log The Line... LOGLINES

Joe: You missed Craig Mazin's point by light years. His point: any logline written about The Godfather is a snooze that will fail to convey the potential of the script.

Because the success of The...

Re: Log The Line... LOGLINES

Gee, Joe. I wouldn't want to put anyone in danger.

But it seems to me setting a 25 word limit is equally misleading.

If you have a high concept like, let's say Seven, sure. You could probably do...

Re: Log The Line... LOGLINES

Is the 28-word logline limit the new rule? Maybe I'm revealing my age but I remember back when the limit was 35 words. I'm in the "no rule" camp -- write a log that reveals the conflict and don't...

Re: Reading to Enjoy vs. Reading to Critique

Prisoners first won several contests and then made the "real" Black List. So it landed on desks with an excellent track record. And - yes - it was a top quality read. Guzikowski is highly skilled and...
