Re: Dialogue and subtext

Here is a literal interpretation:

This is Peyton Sawyer having a conversation with... Peyton Sawyer's subconscious, the Angel of Death.

Here is an...

Re: Nikita

The twist at the end was the only saving grace... But this also comes right back to what Raven said:

Multiply this by two characters... And possibly a third (the computer guy)? Nikita isn't a...

Re: Hereafter

Looks... Purposeful.

It has a kind of "Inception" vibe to it in my opinion. We're able to make connections and form a story that probably doesn't resemble the actual story being told. This is a good...

Re: What makes a great script? Perhaps an award winning script.

One can write a movie with a complex, or clever execution, but that doesn't mean the overall story is good, or even worth telling, necessarily.

In my experience, this is mostly due to them...

Re: What makes a quoteable line or memorable scene in a script?

Listen to this man, for he knows his craft.

A majority of aspiring writers forget not only are scene elements supposed to reveal character and tell the story... But I am a firm believer they should...

Re: New glimmer of hope for spec market

Great, article. I love the insight from real, working writers who tell-it-like-it-is and why it is not as simple as many outsiders think to make "good movies".

If we read between the lines, what the...

Re: What makes a great script? Perhaps an award winning script.

OP, in my opinion, you are asking the wrong question.

What you should be asking is what makes a great story.

The execution is important, obviously, and is something you are acutely aware of it...

Re: Machete Trailer...

Combining Greenwood, Gwai Lo and Bill's lines of thought, I also think it is because we as a society have "grown up" in a lot of ways and now view those hardcore action movies of the past as parodies...

Re: Machete Trailer...

In my opinion, the main difference between action movies from the '80s and '90s is they were allowed to embellish and unabashedly embrace an unapologetic, Right-Wing, Might-Makes-Right, Kill'em All...

Re: Weekend Prediction

Instead always playing armchair studio boss (or screenwriter, or director, etc.) we should also focus on what Machete did right.

Machete is clearly a genre/niche film... And it had a budget that...

Re: The American

I just returned from seeing "The American" and your assessment of the movie is completely wrong.

This is a European film masquerading as a "thriller" because George's name is splashed all over it....

Re: Julianne Courgar Moore

A lot of experienced actors (and actresses) say one of the major flaws of the current studio system is there are no mentors for young and up and coming talent. So, young talent is often left to the...

Re: Julianne Courgar Moore

To answer an ancillary question posed earlier in this thread...

Zach Efron ("High School Musical"; "17 Again") is one of Gen Y and Z's leading men to watch, IMO. He has real acting talent ("Charlie...

Re: Weekend Prediction

I don't believe word-of-mouth has as big an effect like a lot of movie analysts claim.

Yes, it can have an effect with certain films e.g. Moon, but it's mostly with the young, socially networked...

Re: Weekend Prediction

I wasn't ;)

The two big things George has working for him are...

1) Older audiences
2) WOMEN

George is the male Jennifer Aniston. Women will flock to his movies just to "hang out" with him for two...

Re: Leno gets worst rating then Conan did in the same slot!

OT, but this is why a lot of bad shows stay on the air even if their overall viewership drops. This applies double to weblets like The CW, and others.

Back OT...

Re: Weekend Prediction

The interesting thing is this is an all R-Rated, Labor Day weekend.

That's rare.

This makes the potential audience cut and dry unlike PG-13 offerings that mixes things up.

Machete is the obvious...

Re: Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: Recommended for Non-Baby Boomers

So, I guess SP and similar films like this are *not* meant for teen males in particular?

You do realize gender roles in our society ARE changing, right? There is nothing faux about it. And you would...

Re: Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: Recommended for Non-Baby Boomers

This is why I don't frequent this site much any more. No one can simply disagree with someone's opinion. Instead, they go out of their way to try and insult them publicly. Classy, XL. Real classy.

Re: Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: Recommended for Non-Baby Boomers

My main point wasn't so much that teen males have to behave in "manly" ways... It's just that a lot of them don't know how, or have any interest in behaving like this compared to previous generations...

Re: Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: Recommended for Non-Baby Boomers

There is a very real phenomena occurring within millennial generations that was not present in previous generations and that is there is an increase in gender role reversal(s) resulting in a lot of...

Re: Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: Recommended for Non-Baby Boomers

"Scott Pilgrim" and "Kick-Ass" are the epitome of the inexperienced-teen male-rules-all fantasy-type films that only appeal to inexperienced teen males.

SP and K-A are written specifically for a...
