  • Cast A Towering Inferno Remake

I'm not normally one for remakes of classic movies, but I've just been watching The Towering Inferno on TV here, and I was just thinking, if Hollywood decided to raid the vaults and remake this film, who would they cast?

Anybody got any dream casts of who they would like to see in a remake of The Towering Inferno?

(Fmr) Senator Fred Thompson as the Senator

OJ Simpson as the guy on fire falling all the way to the ground.

The weird thing about the disaster movies of the 70s (starting with AIRPORT in the late 60s) is that they were kind of created as movies where they could use a million cameos by stars - ensemble movies. AIRPORT was based on a best selling novel, so the way that story was told became the model for the rest. TOWERING INFERNO was kind of the king of disaster movies because it was a serious all star cast - take away the two leads, and you still have William Holden and Faye Dunaway and a few others who were still carrying a movie back then.

You could still afford to make a movie with more than one star in the cast. Today? At $25 million per star, plus around $10 million in perks? A friend of mine sold a buddy action comedy about a decade ago to Will Smith's company, and they tried to set it up with Tom Cruise as the co-star... but nobody could figure out how to make it work. It would either cost too much up front, or too much on first dollar gross. Look at the hell they went through to make RUSH HOUR 3 because *Chris Tucker* was so expensive!

So, I would do it as claymation.

Make up the cast with former child stars.

Would this make me smarter or dumber than a 5th grader?

I remember thinking in the mid-1990s that I would've cast Treat Williams, Michael Madsen and Harvey Keitel.

Robert Francis "Bobcat" Goldthwait, as Chief O'Hallorhan.

He could help promote the film on Jay Leno's "Tonight Show."

You know who should be cast, even if there's no part for 'im?

                        Abe Vigoda.

                          And Ernest Borgnine.

Because every movie needs a little Ernest Borgnine.

I'd have said Freeman, but I figured it was a given that he is in every movie being made...even from his hospital bed.
