  • GALAHAD - Ryan Condal

Okay, I guess I'll be the first to start a thread about our very own GALAHAD writer, Ryan (Han).

Producers Mark Gill said. "It's also a phenomenally well-written script. It was a nice one to get."

I remember when I first read it and put it down, it continued living inside my head. I don't know if it's because I have a soft spot for the Arthur legend, or because it was so well written (probably both) but it did haunt me in a good way for days after.

The casting choices on this project I imagine to be full of starts lining up to play parts from the myth. Who wouldn't want to play Lancelot? Galahad? Guinevere? King Arthur? Mer'Lin? Etc?

    SPOILERS

The ending showdown with Lancelot and Galahad will promise to be a stunning and nail-biting sequence.

And the final images alone will promise to leave a tingle down the back of your spine.

Congrats on a great job Ryan!

I'm only done with the first act (so maybe I shouldn't even post yet) but I was really knocked out by the quality of the writing. Very confident voice.

Reading a few pages now while listening to Goldsmith's First Knight.
I'll delve into it tomorrow. Distraction free.

In the midst of juggling: reading 2 books, reading 3 scripts, writing time, film score listening, watching films and maintaining a 5 day job per week, I'm always busy, so everything I do must be a learning experience, and I'm always searching for inspiration; I think I was injected with adrenaline this past weekend when I read Galahad.

The script is marvellous. My favourite spec of the year so far. What's so good about it? As others have said, its unique voice refreshes the "King Arthur" period. You could call it revisionist, but that's unfair when you consider that most of the legend is myth anyway. What Ryan has done is taken the structure of the legend and shook it up*, yet preserving the integrity of the myth's foundation that's so loved by us. All the elements are there, but now good and evil might be on different sides.

Where Ryan shows his deft skill is in his action writing. It's concise: I see everything clearly, but not only that, I can also hear it - the swords slicing through torsos. The thunderous hooves shook the very foundations of my room. It was an experience, that's for sure.

His dialogue is confident, it's quite rare to read symphonic words that comes so easily. The bad language I could without, as it threw me out of that universe, but other than that, the dialogue is of high quality.

He's also done a lot of research -- and it shows. He's obviously got a lot of affection for this sort of material.

Of course there are areas which could be improved a little, and I suspect there might be a re-write, which should be minor, because this script is 90% there.

Ryan, you've inspired me. Thanks, pal.

          * Purists will be upset, but once you see it - it will be made - you won't care. It's a story well told.

Dammit, as much as I'd like to I can't read it, I've got 3 scripts and 2 novels with Arthurian themes.

I'm heading off in 2 weeks for a much needed vacation. I've got a bunch of specs I'm taking with me, and Galahad is at the top of that list.

                Can't wait to read it.

Terry, what about all those hot girls parading provocatively on the beach?

First off, dpaterso, you simply have to read GALAHAD and if you don't I will personally fly over to Scotland and make you do it against your will

Secondly, re: GALAHAD and messin' with the myths…

On my 30th birthday I dragged my g/f (now wife) all the way down to Tintagel, in Cornwall, England, and we stayed at the amazingly $hitty The Camelot Castle and mooched around soaking up the legend of Arthur as a complete and utter idiot tourist that I am.

Anyway, back to GALAHAD… you'd think that with Ryan messin' with the great myth it would work against and even upset purist of the legend, but what Ryan has done is probably single handedly done what CASINO ROYALLE (07) did for the Bond franchise, and that's re-born the franchise of KING ARTHUR (and let's face it, we'll all pretend nobody saw THE FIRST KNIGHT).

So a big round of applause is due to Ryan for hopefully bringing back King Arthur into this renaissance period of fantasy and myth movies of today.

                          Re: GALAHAD - Ryan Condal

I definitely thought it was well written although, it felt cumbersome for me to read. Maybe a little overwritten? I find quick, terse sentences much easier to consume. I just got done reading the Bourne trilogy which probably didn't help going into this. The story is wonderful though. Congratulations to anyone that gets a spec sold. I've been reading a lot of specs with vastly different writing styles recently and it just makes me realize that a good story/concept is vastly more important then the way it's written. To a certain point.
