  • Writing for Episodic TV: From Freelance to Showrunner

The following book is a must-read for all wanting to pursue a television writing career. So much so, THIS POST SHOULD BE A STICKY.

This WGAw booklet aims to provide you with a sense of the job, and what's expected of you once you've gotten the job, so that the collective goal of producing quality television can be accomplished more effectively, congenially, and successfully by all.

Check out the link to this free downloadable book at www.wga.org/manuals/episo...c_toc.html

If you want a hard copy of the booklet...

...the Writer's Guild Library at 3rd and Fairfax in L.A. will give you one for free.

Praxis used to make a copy available to their members when they were independent. Now try Simon Fraser Downtown.

The original link now seems to be dead. Try this instead.

Thanks, but if that's all true, where did 'quality television' go?

As dead as most of the actors, writers, producers, and directors who, together, created it.

It went to premium channels like HBO.

Boardwalk Empire, Game of Thrones, Dexter, The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Homeland, etc.

There's still plenty of great shows out there. Just fewer on basic cable.

Probably the best book on TV writing:

                              sniff, sniff, sniff

you're right, cable stations still have some nice shows, but have you noticed how almost all put 'close to' porn into the show to 'grab' the audience? The Tudors, Big Love etc., American Horror story. Gotta say Big Love is ok, a friend of mine writes for it, the rest I'm not too keen about. But damn! The Walking Dead got me waiting for the next eeeeeepyz
