Only thing I didn't like about it is that it doesn't even rank in my top 5 (or maybe even 10) of Washington's performances, but it was the first to get him the Best Actor Oscar.
As for Fuqua, I agree that his script selection is shotty, but Training Day is by far his best. One thing you have to consider though is that he aims for projects that many would consider to be "out of his realm" because of his melanin count, and because of that, he gets a lot of scripts that "other" directors may have passed on (Replacement Killers, King Arthur, Tears of the Sun, etc.)
