  • D.i.y.

I'm just wondering if anyone has ever considered registering their own company and looking for funding to make their own film?

It seems that we spend a hell of a lot of time hoping that our queries will appeal to someone, whereas we could just spent this time taking our scripts out and getting sh1t done ourselves.

Frighteningly enough, researching Producer as a career shows that there are NO FORMAL REQUIREMENTS. That's right: no need to know how cameras work, actors' rights, distribution deal contracts or even a business background - it's literally: get the cash, make the film. A total hit-or-miss.

So, if you've faith in your best screenplay, why not Do It Yourself?

I'd appreciate non-flamers posting replies (but know it's not going to happen).

EDIT: The topic's supposed to be in capital letters; I guess I missed that.

Aren't you writing a book about this based on your own experiences?

Yeah, but I haven't had the experience yet. (still haven't shot the film.)

I'll let ya borrow my smartphone. 5 megapixel movie goodness.

We just need to get a couple of girls and... nevermind, wrong film genre.

            Alternatively:

Frighteningly enough, researching Screenwriter as a career shows that there are NO FORMAL REQUIREMENTS. That's right: no need to know how scene reversals, setup/payoff dialog or even genre expectations work - it's literally: buy Final Draft, write the script. A total hit-or-miss.
Logically either both arguments are correct or neither are.

I'd say the result is the same in both .. the other people who provide money to the producer or writer will know pretty quickly if they are being effective and stop providing money to them pretty quickly.

            Good luck,

            Mac

Been there; done that, (see JEKYLL & CANADA); and, doing it again, this year with another project. Unlike most "Canadian films", I am financing my projects entirely with my own money.

Which of course, requires money. I guess if I won a Euro Millions mega jackpot I wouldn't need investors (then again, I'd likely just retire!).

Best of luck with your project; please keep us apprised.

                  Re: D.i.y. -- Here's one - viable - answer

I just helped (through a banner ad, etc. on a web site which in turn promotes a TV show which featured these guys biking across the U.S.) a Scottish couple raise funds for their film -- by funneling people to their site on ...

                  Main site: http://www.indiegogo.com/

                  Their link: http://www.indiegogo.com/sleepless-til-seattle-movie

                  So there's one method.

                  Go forth and prosper!!!

I guess this begs the question... if any of you won a sizable lotto would you at least finance or maybe even shoot your own work?

                    My vote is Hell yes!

If anyone's answer to that is "no" I'd have to wonder why they're here.

in addition to indiegogo -- kickstarter is huge now. tom hanks jr was even on there trying to get funding for a documentary... cause he didn't want to ask daddy for the money. poor thing...
