The main problem with Hollywood horror is that the execs like to play it safe, and well-crafted horror is the antithesis of safe. Another problem is that solid horror writers aren't being cultivated...because anyone can write a horror script, right? Just have the Final Girl move from A to Z and throw some blood and flesh around in between.

Another problem with Hollywood horror anymore is the dogged reliance on trope and cliché. It's like comedy that relies on the same handful of jokes repeated in every film. Which is funny, considering how Scream meta-tized the problem, but those tropes are still being used.

        Yeah, I'd agree.

The remake of successful Spanish or Japanese horror movies paradigm sucks because it is in lieu of developing new material.

I'm sure all execs would love to have another Paranormal Activity fall in to their lap. (PA a great example of marketing, just like Blair Witch, both scary, but... meh)

Comedy is the toughest because when they fail, it just reeks of desperation.

Fortunately Jack and Jill is sure to be a winner.

Comedy -- I've learned to accept that there only one or two good ones a year. I'm okay with that.

Action -- Special Effects these days are astounding but the story and dialogue are typically weak.

Thriller -- never cared too much for this category anyway.

Sci-Fi -- for every Moon there's a dozen crappy ones but the good outweigh the bad.

Horror -- absolutely the worst. I haven't seen a decent horror film in probably over a decade.

I did forget about Let the Right One In. I absolutely love that movie.

                  Lately... drawing a blank

                  But in the past decade...

                  The Hangover
                  Old School
                  Wedding Crashers
Meet The Parents - (I know, released in 2000)
                  40 Year Old Virgin

                  To a lesser extent...

                  Superbad
Forgetting Sarah Marshall - a nice surprise
Tropic Thunder - could have been so much better, but was good.

In thinking about it, there is more comedy fare that has not disappointed me than horror.

Re: Which Genre Tends To Dissappoint You The Most?

I watch Horror films mostly, and so it's the Horror genre that most consistently disappoints me.

I watch them to be scared. I don't watch them because I want to see a new and innovative way to kill or torture someone.

I recently received some feedback on my script which made note to see if I can come up with some more creative kills. Now while I appreciate the feedback, I also stand firm in that I'm writing something to scare people and what I'm not doing is writing the next Saw or Hostel.

For me, easy - action movies..

I get so bloody bored with most action movies. Horribly trite characters, predictably lame story, action sequences that aren't exciting. Fights that i yawn through... It's stale genre for the most part right now.

We have identical taste in comedies. That would be my list too. I'd probably add Knocked Up, but that's about it.

I haven't really seen any comedies I thought were actually funny in a long time. I'm not a big fan of the Apatow style that's still in vogue...

...although I did like Bad Teacher. But that was retro.

Re: Which Genre Tends To Dissappoint You The Most?

Action has been on the decline in the past few years. Since we've reached a point where special affects don't wow people the way they did a decade or two ago, the story has to carry the film, and the odds of that happening in H-wood are less than that of Steven Hawking winning a strongman competition.

Same deal with horror - everything's been done, and too many horror movies look and feel like regular movies, which is poison for the genre. And like how special effects are no longer special and have become the norm, shock value means nothing. There's no such thing anymore. We've seen everything.

Comedy? Most of them suck. Any random episode of Community or Curb Your Enthusiasm is twice as funny as any ten modern comedy films. And again, everything's been done.

I'll say I am consistently unimpressed and disappointed by sequels and remakes. And any poorly-written film devoid of logic.

Animation is far and away the most consistent in terms of storytelling prowess and artistic integrity.

Yeah, I appreciate Apatow's voice with some films more than others.

                              Signal,

                              Bad Teacher...

Now that's just effin scary. That's horror.

Well, horror is my genre. Maybe that's why I liked it. It was definitely funnier than Zombieland.
