Freud, (2020), in German with English subtitles; supernatural thriller — “Eager to make his name in 19th-century Vienna, a hungry young Sigmund Freud joins a psychic and an inspector to solve a string of bloody mysteries.”

This series imagines a young Freud as a physician struggling against the conventions of the day and with an ardent desire to make the medical community come around to his thoughts on treatments of “hysteria in women” through the use of hypnosis.

Already addicted to cocaine, and long before he becomes known for his breakthrough discoveries, Dr. Freud finds himself working in concert with a medium—who proves her supernatural power to him while at the same time bolstering his theories of psychoanalysis—and together they solve grisly murders.

I’ve seen one episode and I’m hooked, despite having to “read the show” (subtitles come with it). The writing is highly researched and intelligent. A scene of Freud in the Physicians’ Lecture Auditorium is particularly moving (and accurate for any of us), a speech that is later echoed and in a way that is haunting.

This show is well written. The story turns are well-executed and the production value is excellent. If the remaining episodes are as good as the first, it’s going to be a fun ride.

Edit to add: Watched 3 episodes so far, and it is a fun ride.

Edit to add: Watched all 8 episodes, and it was excellent. The whole program wrapped up nicely, too. All storylines intersected and were satisfactorily resolved.
