Producer Pro Bono
Why do established, credentialed producers take scripts for free?
Because they can. Because, no matter how successful they are, or how many credits they have, few independent (the key word here is "independent") producers are willing to risk their own money on a project. Even if they love your script, the film business is a risky investment at any level. Yes, it's your hard work (mine too -- I'm a writer), but it's their contacts and their postage and their talking it up to anyone within hearing distance. And IF they have a good track record, and IF you sign an agreement that they can shop your script, a producer can usually get it into better hands than an agent can (unless said agent is one of the top three in town).
