Some people thought it sounded funny, like it was about suburbia.

Anyway, now I have it listed on BL 3.0 as VENGEANCE IS NOT THE LORD'S (previously Pleasant Valley War).

Semis are up - my QF scripts (one with a score of 141) didn't make it

I guess that means the next round of judges really didn't like it, huh? I am experiencing my dark night of the soul (which means the climax and my big come back are about to happen, right?)

                        Re: Fresh Voice Writers Contest

I guess I'll revive this thread instead of making a new topic.

I just got my feedback today after I did the early submission back in August. I'm really surprised by the feedback because I was expecting some short, half-assed review considering it was free. But no, it was really detailed and helpful, and I can tell the person had read the whole thing instead of skimming through it.

He/She said the script had a lot of potential, just tighten up the pacing and be more concise on the script's tone.

Got a 130/160 overall. I'll definitely work to improve the script and probably resubmit in November.

Cool, congrats. Just remember, resubmitting doesn't guarantee you the same reader. I did this last year and the new reader didn't like some of the exact things the first reader liked, and gave me a much lower score. So... My thoughts are to not waste the money resubmitting, but up to you. Better to take your time, and if you feel like submitting again next year, do that. Don't rush it.

That's interesting, thanks for replying. I guess the real question here is how much the scores actually impact your chances of furthering into the competition? Again, most of the critique he had with my script was just personal preferences. In this case pacing issues--They wanted some scenes cut shorter, a few things moved around here and there, nothing that required a major overhaul of the script.

I read on here that a score above 140 had a better chance of advancing, but does that mean anything below can't? Your comment definitely got me thinking. Even if I do make the changes and resubmit, there's no guarantee that I'll get a higher score. Hell, the next person reviewing it might give me the same score as the first guy!

                              Re: Fresh Voice Writers Contest

Exactly - and my two scripts had 141 and 139, from the first reviewer. They probably say on their site, but I think the way it works is now another reader will read your script to see if it should go to the next stage, and the two scores are averaged, I think. So in theory you have a chance the next reader could read it and give you a 140, and your average would be the same (I am guessing) as mine ended up being last year, which got me to QF but not beyond.

So it's up to you, but I would rather revise, submit to Nicholl next year, and then if you still want submit the revised and heavily thought about script next year again, for free feedback again. After doing this a bit you start to think a year doesn't really matter, and resubmitting doesn't necessarilly help your chances.

(PS - I am biased, as I spent too much money on contests last year and had a couple situations like this, mostly with FreshVoices and BlueCat, so take my advice with that in mind. The other side is a know some people that did well here and at other contesets like CWA, where I was a finalist and they won 2nd place or something - it still didn't get them anything really. So it's best to look at these contests as learning tools, not as a lottery ticket).

                                Re: Fresh Voice Writers Contest

These scores are deceptive. I remember getting 130/160, but my script was LIGHTYEARS from being pro-level. My story and structure were all over the place. Hell, looking back, my script wasn't actually ABOUT anything. The protagonist's goal shifted every 30 pages FFS! Lol.

On that note, if you're scoring in the near perfect range, it might be a better indicator of your scripts overall quality.

P.S. That exact same script went on to win ScriptVamp a few weeks later when it really shoudn't have. I still feel guilty about it today
I'm never wrong. Reality is just stubborn.
