I like insidious characters who are always plotting.

    Like Hugo Drax.

If your plot sucks, you movie will most likely suck.

Well naturally. But I was referring to films that emphasis one element over the other.

For example, ROCKY I would be more character driven while ROCKY IV would be more plot driven.

personally, i'm drawn to more character driven
but must admit that plot driven movies can be more entertaining for the masses

Plot driven, but it better have some damn good characters. I can't stand those movies about following people around while they discover themselves. Some hijinks damn well better ensue.

Oh it most certainly is not. Put a bunch of interesting people in a room together and you still have a boring movie. Make one of them murder a nun and you have a story.

if the nun did the murder then it would be character driven.

I prefer to see movies where the $150 million is well-spent. So it better have at least 1 or 2 actors I love and/or lots of actiony set pieces.

                        Agreed.

Plot is ACTION - people doing stuff.

The people doing the stuff are the characters.

Rocky does stuff - interesting stuff. He also happens to be an interesting guy. The combination and juxtaposition of both is why people like the film so much.

If plot-driven means interesting stuff happens, tension builds, and there's a resolution, and character-driven means unlikable characters sit around navel-gazing, then I much prefer plot-driven movies. But I like them to have complex characters with arcs.

plot IS character-driven action. Rocky doesn't just do "stuff." The plot of Rocky -- a boxer everyone (including himself) thinks is a bum proves them all wrong in the fight of his life -- arises out of Rocky's relentless drive to beat Apollo Creed. everything that happens in the movie is a result of the actions Rocky takes toward achieving his external goal and overcoming his character's internal obstacles.
