One of the unfortunate perils of screenwriting is that sometimes you get the nagging feeling that you might have heard a joke before in a movie or on a show and it has now found its way into your script. It is even worse when it might be from the show you are specing.
The last thing I want to do is use something that has already been done. But I don't want to watch every episode again just to see if they used it. From my always sunny spec: MAC i can't belief pee-paw is dead. FRANK Well, think of it this way, now heaven has another angel. MAC He was actually a real bastard. That's why I'm so upset. I'm pretty sure he's burning in hell...like right now...as we speak. I know I could change the joke, but it is organic and I would prefer to keep it. If you have seen it before.......please let me know!!!!!!!!!!

I don't recall it off the top of my head. I rewatched the show like 5 times over and wrote a spec of it myself.

I think I recall Frank saying something along the lines of "I hope he burns in hell"...

I think it was Jane Espenson who said, "There's always a better joke."
If a joke has a naggingly familiar feel to it, maybe it's not fresh enough, even if it hasn't been used on the show. Also, the only people with an encyclopedic knowledge of which jokes have been used on the show are the show's own staff and rabid fans. The people who read your spec may be rabid fans, or they may not be. It's always good practice to try to find a better joke, or a different joke, since this is a big part of a sitcom writer's work. Like: "They run out of room in hell?" ___________ "I'm sure he's burning in hell, unless they shut it down for global warming." ___________ "Maybe. If God has, like, really, really low standards."
