As a first time writer/director with a million dollar budget what would be a reasonable request for pay?

Without knowing any of the other particulars, I think that 2.5%-5% of the $1M budget for writing and directing services would be reasonable. So $25k-$50k. Depending on whether further writing services are needed, or if they need to hire a more experienced line producer, AD, DP, etc. to counterbalance the lack of experience with the director.

Yes, 2.5 - 5.0% would be the norm in that range.
