I love it when I show some film fanatic a beautiful clip and they say "THIS is why film is still SUPERIOR to ANYTHING!" Then I reveal that the clip wasn't shot on film. BOOM!

Wait. I thought Paul was dead. No, that was God. No, not quite right, either...irony? Isn't that dead? Funny how these dead things continue to exist.

Except for God. I killed that mother******.

I don't care what the hell it's shot on as long as it's awesome.

Director Abel Gance was worried that the film's finale wouldn't have the proper impact by being confined to a small screen. Gance thought of expanding the frame by using three cameras next to each other. For the first time, cinema utilized a rectangular image (with an approximate 4.00 : 1 aspect ratio). This is probably the most famous of the film's several innovative techniques. Though American filmmakers began experimenting with 70 mm widescreen in 1929, widescreen didn't take off until CinemaScope was invented in 1953. ~ IMDb

Well the RED Scarlet-X was released today, and it's somewhat of a game changer in the sense that it is the first time a serious 4k resolution cinema quality camera has been available for what is such a low price, just under 10 grand (13 for accessories)... this is good news for independents who want to play like the big boys.

The next Spiderman and Peter Jackson's Hobbit films are being shot on the Scarlet's big brother the Epic (5k resolution).

I love 35mm but Hollywood likes to do things more cost effectively, and so do independents. We'll be seeing a lot more RED in the future.

It's just been announced - a new *FILM* movie camera.

Proof that film isn't dead after all!

And for all of those budget conscious film makers .. it is cheaper than the Red. A lot cheaper.

It's got some pretty advanced features - like one button focusing and a fully controllable frame rate.

I'm sure critics will find some minor features of the camera lacking (insert smiley face) ... but you can't deny that it's a new movie camera: http://microsites.lomography.com/lomokino/

The "Matrix Bundle" looks like a great Winter Solistice gift to myself.

A Super35 Lomokino, DigitaLIZA mask, and Lomokino viewer, along with six rolls of film, (enough for six short films), for the grand price of CAN$142.84.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cxiKpzrMloE

However, this simply allows oneself to duplicate the output of a digital RED camera, with some limitations, (once the image is scanned); so, I'd add the Spinner 360 camera, (for CAN$99), to enable myself to take 360 degree panorama images, too, (which is a lot more expensive on any digital device). Approximately eight 360 degree shots from one 36-shots roll of 35mm film; that's real cheap, and could be printed (in glorious analog) directly from the negative, (previewed and touched-up in a digital editing program, once scanned on a flatbed scanner with the same DigitaLIZA that the Lomokino uses). No batteries; pull the cord, and the rubber-band power pac does the rest. Can't do that with a RED camera!

Of course, I like the extra features that my Bolex, Eyemo, Krasnogorsk and Photo Sonics cameras can provide, on film, with their many accessories.

A bit more than a month ago, I bought a couple of GoPro Hero cameras and their 3D system, only to be shocked by their recent announcement of the better Hero2 cameras. Fortunately, both cameras work in the same 3D package, so I'm contemplating having the Hero cameras converted over to infrared lenses. Altho I am a "film" enthusiast, it's best to know what "film" can do better than "digital video", and vice versa.

A film about DIGITAL vs. FILM

http://www.slashfilm.com/side-by-sid...s/#more-115311

Side by Side is a documentary directed by Chris Kenneally in which Keanu Reeves (who also produced) talks about film and video with a wide variety of filmmakers, including Steven Soderbergh, James Cameron, David Lynch, Richard Linklater, Martin Scorsese, Andy & Lana Wachowski, Christopher Nolan, Walter Pfister, David Fincher and many, many more.

When I was twenty-one, I travelled to New York City to see my father for the first time since I was six years old. At this time, after a long struggle, he had become a film editor at CBS. Sometime during our whiskey-soaked discussion, I mentioned to him that I wanted to be a "filmmaker." That never happened of course, but anyway...

My dad said, "Why do you want to be a filmmaker? Film is dead."

I said, "What do you mean film is dead? Nothing can take the place of film."

"Sure it can. Computers will be taking the place of film. Now that we have control of the dots."

"No way. For television maybe. But there's no way that process can match the resolution of film for the large screen. You'd just be looking at a bunch of dots."

"What, don't you read the papers? They even have discs now that you can play a movie just like a record. Get used to it."

"There's still no way that technology will ever take the place of film."

"I give it ten years."

My father and I had this discussion in 1975...

So he was only half right.
