Thanks to all who took part, yes it would have been nice if more people had shown up, but sometimes real life gets in the way and sometimes there just aren't enough folks checking in, what can ya do.

If you made any notes while reading, feel free to post 'em here, comments are always appreciated. Well mostly always.

For posterity's sake, the discussion thread is here and the entries thread is here.

Re: Results - Winter is Coming contest

    My votes went like,

    1st - Nuclear Winter
2nd - Winter is Coming excerpt
    3rd - Them Bones

    And my thoughts went like,

    It's A Dog's Life

First entry received, happened to be mine! Alas, very little love for dog.

    Winter is Coming excerpt

Well this is a bit of gung-ho Sci-Fi, I liked the scope, I liked the action, I liked the sword and the bagpipes, some crazy sh!t here, bada-boom, eff those aliens. A fun read, if slightly prose-y in places.

    Nuclear Winter

That was an amusing, thoughtful read and I think I'm supposed to feel something because the robots haven't awoken the humans from suspended animation, despite the outside world having returned to a natural state. Which is a sad tragedy and earns a vote.

Winter is Coming for the English Patient

Just seeing the title made me smile. Rahul's bullet hitting the German pilot and causing a pile-up in mid-air fried my brain a little but certainly set a mood. The Mime/mine substitution was funny... the first time. Alas insanity levels rose until I prayed for therapy. It's clever but it missed my target by several turban feathers. I saw it more as a zany Spongebob type cartoon, which is not an insult.

    Them Bones

I never knew the cat meat industry was so pervasive! A readable bit of fun, it would have earned a higher vote if Jerry had brought the boys to Jim's Grocery and watched as they beat the sh!t out of Jim.

    Odd Man Out

I thought more people would submit more than one entry! So this was my 2nd entry, it was ready to go so it got posted along with the others. Alas this script wasn't all that popular either. Kinda topical considering what's been in the news recently. But evidently not a big vote puller, sadface.

Re: Results - Winter is Coming contest

Thanks for the voting for the little robot... at least I didn't name him "Pipsqueak" — only Pip "who squeaked." That's something, anyhow.

My votes went this way... 1. Them Bones (because it was a script written for this particular contest, though I think it could have used more at the end). 2. Winter is Coming Excerpt even though it really wasn't an exercise written for this contest. The last little bit is what got it its vote. 3. Winter is Coming for the English Patient even though it was uneven. I'm guessing the satire/slapstick comedy would have made a bit more sense if I had ever actually watched The English Patient. I've got a feeling this also wasn't written specifically for this contest. (I could be wrong.)

It's a Dog's Life and Odd Man Out didn't do much for me. (Sorry Derek.) Dog's Life was basically six pages of "we should" — "we shouldn't" and then the last two pages veered suddenly (and unexpectedly) into a... I don't know, kind of a weird porno. Is take the dog for a "walkie" a common term in England? I thought it was overly cute, but maybe it's a culture thing. Odd Man Out came across as completely unrealistic, on the nose, propaganda. It had the subtlety of getting hit over the head with a 2x4. Sorry, but that's the way I saw it. But at least (I think) these were specifically written for the exercise.

Which brings me to this comment... and I'm really coming across as an ass tonight (sorry). These are supposed to be exercises written specifically for the particular contest. It's kind of frustrating to write something and then read somebody's excerpt from a full-length screenplay, with a bit tacked on to make it kind of match the theme. Personally I think the themes are usually a little too vague (though I like the upcoming one).

With that I'll shut up. Sorry.
STANDARD DISCLAIMER: I'm a wannabe, take whatever I write with a huge grain of salt.

Thanks for your thoughts and thanks for posting, response for this contest has been doubly lackadaisical, I was thinking if this is what it's going to be like, maybe it's time to stop.

Cannot argue with that, no need for sorries. Yep they were written for the exercise.

I thought use of "walkies" was wider spread than just the UK, that's how you tell dogs to get ready, say the word and they leap up panting with enthusiasm. I thought the dialogue was kinda fun but maybe not!

The seed for Odd Man Out was spawned by Southern_land's flat Earth idea thread in Story Development. I'd posted thoughts in that thread at the time but mine seemed smarter and better developed than anyone else's (!) so I deleted my post, but I held onto the idea and used it here. Not flat Earth, but climate change. I thought it was the opposite of completely unrealistic given current events and the science is evil mentality, but there ya go!

Again thanks for taking time and responding, glad someone did. Well done for your win.

Oddly I was reading something in the past couple of days about someone wanting to do a reality show on Flat Earthers seeking the edge

Actually it was written for the contest but it's a excerpt from a fully blown Sci Fi alien invasion extravaganza that I've never able to come to grips with. It popped into my head that banging out the climatic battle scene might be a way to break into the script properly

And for those of you who liked the pipes and sword you'd love the last aircraft of the human airforce. Handmade coal fired jet fighters!

Check out this bad boy and this

Re: Results - Winter is Coming contest

              My votes:
              1st -- Nuclear
2nd -- Winter is Coming (Excerpt)
3rd -- Winter is Coming (English Patient)

              A Dog's Life.
Just not my kind of story, even though it did have a twist I didn't see coming.

              Winter is Coming (Excerpt).
2nd place vote. Mostly based on liking Fletcher. There's something about someone who never gives up.

              Winter is Coming (English Patient)
3rd place vote. I'm guessing this was a spoof of The English Patient, which I never saw. There was a lot in this. In my opinion, it could have slowed down a little. The Mime cracked me up. More Mime please.

              Nuclear Winter.
1st place vote. The setting sold me on this one. I could see it and even though it was a little depressing, it was a little uplifting too. I thought it was well done.

              Them Bones.
Mine. I probably disliked this one about as much as anything I ever posted for these contests. I'm getting too predictable.

              Odd Man Out.
Not a big fan of this one either. It seemed that the people were way too gullible to fall for this. But there's probably wack-a-doodles out there that would.

This is probably the only contest that dpaterso got no votes from me. Normally I like what he writes.
